TD5 will not start

Me too !!

Not good start to ownership when it's broken down after 2 weeks but hey ho.
Plus side I'm now familiar with the td5 engine and electrics. Also bought a refurbed ecu from monster tuning with a stage 2 remap. Drives really well now.

Eezi start - never had to use it before on any vehicle I've owned and I've had a few in my time.
Convert now.
 
Having done all that can you say for sure what was causing the problem?

Well done, good learning curve. At the moment my curve is very long with lots of peaks & troughs.
 
Well, it sounds like it's behaving itself now, but for what it's worth a) the fuel purge sequence described in the manual is often nowhere near enough - mine takes ages to purge through and start if I change a filter or fuel pump. b) Don't forget the condition of the wiring loom itself - insulation can chafe and get brittle and the copper wire itself can go a bit crisp and break. And seeing as there are so many wires on aTD5 that's an awful lot of checking to do. c) A lot of faults, at least in the early stages, can be intermittent so it's worth waggling all the wires about.
 
Ecu definitely at fault - power circuit to injectors was not working.
Easy to test with a nanocom when not running but scope required when cranking.
True alot of faults can be intermittent but these show as a misfire not a non starter.

Concern was after I replaced the ecu and could see injectors were firing I still couldn't get the engine to catch. Luckily had use of another car in the downtime.

Anyway good that the majority of Defender parts are cheap on the whole - well apart from the ecu. !!

I had a similar issue but with a Disco. I changed the fuel pressure regulator and hey, presto! If you do change this, make sure the gasket is the correct way. I put it in wrong and stopped the fuel completley :doh:
