Hi all....new to this forum but hoping for help. Have starting issues with TD5
1. Engine can turn over but not start
2. Sometimes it starts first turn of key
3. If it does not start first time....you can switch off and try again...it might start after 2nd or third attempt BUT it always starts.....during the attempted starts the engine turns over no problem and the fuel gauge moves a bit up and down and the rev counter needles moves back and forth all the way to maximum revs (not sure if this is normal?)
4. leading up to this issue, the stater motor would not engage until I changed to a new starter motor
5. Leading up to this the temperature gauge would climb to maximum now and again BUT WOULD NOT OVERHEAT.....it still does this now and again maybe every after every few days pop driving

I have tried various things to trouble shoot....any ideas please or someone that had a similar issue?

Assuming your battery is tip top, the first thing to do is check all your earth leads are clean and secure. Odd eletcric behavior is usually down to earthing problems.

Thanks. I already spent some time going through all my earth connections and cleaning / secure them etc. The battery seems fine. Going to go through them again as I may have missed something

Check all the relays under the drivers seat base are fully home and check contacts are clean, worth unplugging the ECU socket to check for oil coming down from the injector harness, this is a common problem and if oil gets onto other contacts or into the ECU can cause problems.

Thanks. So I have even gone as far as replacing all relays with new genuine LR relays and checking all contacts. I unplugged the ECU but did not see oil - however, the engine side of this wire harness always get a lot of oil (I cleaned this as I do regularly). How do I know if oil has got into the ECU? Any other thoughts? Is it worth trying another ECU?

If the red plug is free of oil the ECU is probably clear, but you can always open it up to check. But oil at the other end of the loom where it plugs into the injector harness suggests the injector harness may need replacement anyway. If the relays are fine then possibly the fusebox itself is corroded. If you suspect the ECU then connect a suitable diagnostic tool and look for Top Switch errors.

I would be trying a different crank sensor and temp sensor as you mentioned the rev gauge showing full revs when turning over

A diagnostic check would show if the crank position sensor feed was fuzzy. It would certainly explain the reluctance to start.

Do you know what diagnostic machine they used? The TD5 is not OBDII compliant so unless it was one of a few Land Rover specific ones it would not have read the codes correctly.

These guys run nearly 15 TD5s so I think it was the correct machine....I am not sure which one though but I think I trust it. thanks for your input so far? I am at a dead end
