Disco 2 TD5 used to start "on the button" ...

...but now doesn't. Now cranks endlessly on the first try, but starts first time on the second.

Not noticed any spluttering or smoke or other ill-effects.

Just started happening.

Likely to be fuel-related?

Sounds like a good starting place.
There are quite a few threads on here covering TD5 starting, may give you some ideas.
