I have a 2003 TD5 Disco and recently had both prop shafts replaced due to loud rumbling noises at 55 mph, however, I still have a slight rumbling sound at all speeds - sometimes its louder, sometimes I can't hear it at all.

I have tried all sorts of driving 'techniques' to see if I can isolate the sound - downhill out of gear, on the flat out of gear at various speeds etc.

All I have discovered is that if its in neutral and moving I cant really hear it but when in gear its obvious. One garage suggested the clutch but personally I think that's because they want the thick end of a grand to replace it!

My worst scenario is the big ends - had a similar rumble on a Triumph GT6 a number of years ago. However, its just passed the MOT and one of the advisory points was that there is some play in the near side (outer) track rod end - do you think that this maybe causing the rumble? Has any one in the forum had a similar experience or other suggestions as to what this maybe.

Investigate further if u want to isolate the fault...put the car on axle stands and try with the wheels in the air... if it's the same disconnect the propshafts and do it so... if u have CDL u can take off the front propshaft, block the central diff and see then ... the garage could have had a point... but more likely the flywheel than the clutch

to me a noisy worn dual mass fly wheel would be more noisy at tickover or during rev changes, check the oil for contamination on gear box /transfer box and diffs ,run trhrough the gears with t/box in neutral
