Td5 starter motor gone??

I have had starting problems for a couple of days now and it was looking like I will be changing the injector seals and washers, BUT, I went to start the engine this evening and initially it started( after 10 secs of turning over ) and now it won't even turn the engine, sounds like the starter motor is turning on it's own but not engaging with the engine, is there any way I can get round this or is a new starter motor required?

Push the car forward in gear with ignition off as to slightly turn the engine then try again....it seems the starter ring doesnt engage

Done that, can't move it much though or it will be stranded on the road, would it make a difference that it is automatic? Is there a chance I have lost all the teeth on the starter ring?

Unlikely you've lost all the teeth, more likely the solenoid in the starter is stuck.

Am I right in thinking that the solenoid drives the cog onto the engine flywheel and the starter motor just turns over if the solenoid fails?

Partially, on D2 the solenoid when gets feed from ignition does two things, push the cog into the flywheel as u said and energizes the starter motor through its contacts....usually the D2 solenoid doesnt fail to push the cog....it fails to close the circuit and the starter motor is not turning(that's why the repair kit comprise just some copper contacts and a core)...so when u ignite and the starer motor runs that means it just cant induce the movement to the flywheel

Climbed under the car today and located the starter motor only to find the bottom bolt was missing and the other two were so loose that the whole unit was nearly out. (this will be why it wasn't making contact with the flywheel). I tightened the two existing bolts up and it fired up right away!, I'll need to source a bolt for that bottom one that went missing, anyone know what size it is??

The top one is a 15mm nut on mine.... u need an extension to do this one, it's quite naughty the bottom is 14mm
