Mates got a td5 defender, 15p

Recently he has noticed its breathing hevey out of the rocker cover even on idle and blowing smoke from the rocker breather aswell.

It's also smokes (blue) when it's cold from the exhaust and sound like a small miss fire. Smoke on idle clears when warm but is still there under very light throttle. But there's no smoke at full boost or normal driving.

Any idea befor he tarts pulling it apart, head gasket? Piston rings? Any pre checks he can do or others tell tale signs?

He's pulled the head and he said there was a bit of blow by on the gasket, he's sent the head off for testing and skimming.

For anyone who uses the search and might need this in the future,
He had the head tested and it was fine, he got the stem seals replaced and valves ground. Replaced the injector seals and

It was still the same. He bought another engine as its a work tool and they carnt afford it off the road whilst he rebuilds it, He says it's a million times better now and must have been the piston rings.

He's Gona now strip the old engine check everything and rebuild it at his leisure to a bigger and better one apparently!!!
