TD5 rough running

Managed to get it off! had to use bar on crank bolt.
The rubber on the outer part looks shot. cant really see anything on the belt part
Do I have to put the 3 bolts back before stating it up? (dont have any washers to pack them out with)

only taken off the outer ring. not started it yet as unsure about starting it ithout the 3 bolts in it. the rubber in the outer ring is dry and perished. the rubber in the pulley section (still attached to car) is soft. when i move the inner pulley by hand, the section where the outer ring doesnt move
It's hard to say without seeing the thing, but it sounds very like the multi-part pulley is coming apart because the rubber bonding is perishing or rotting. If it disintegrated while you were cruising the slab at 65 mph you could do a lot of damage.
Assuming you know the nosie was apparent even in neutral, you can run the engine up for a minute or two with the belt off and the pulley as it is.
Then you will know it is something to do with the pulley or the belt driven things.
Don't forget to re-assemble the pulley before driving!
Where are you? Ask if there's a LandyZoner near who could have a look for a second opinion. Then try around for a replacement pulley.

I can only just see movement in my pulley if I apply serious leverage with a big screwdriver. If yours is soft or floppy I reckon it's a gonner.

UPDATE!!!!
Fitted a new battery tonight, started straight away and.......... from first impressions when reving engine on drive......vibration gone!
so it was caused by one of these things (if cured! will road test later!)
Incorrect injector adjustment
Blocked fuel filter (although have checked service book and it was last done 5K ago)
or a Knacked battery

NEVER EVER take a TD5 more than 100 yards from your door unless you have TWO spare fuel filters in the back.
It filters the fuel MUCH more finely than usual filters, and quite a small amount of crap or water will snooker you. The TD5 (Disco and Defender) can be stopped by dirty fuel that other diesels will pass.
It's a easy job even on the motorway - IF YOU HAVE A SPARE.
I have changed two on the roadside. Both times the engine was cruising fine till I had to slow down and let teh engine idle. It didn't. It stopped and would not start.
Change filter, purge fuel by pedal-decking procedure, and drive away as if nothing ahd happened.
But that's IF you have the spare filter!

My own suspicion now is that you may have a gas leak from a copper washer at an injector tip.
If this is the problem, it will not get better.
What happens is that gas gets into the fuel rail from the leaking injector and screws up the fuel supply into all the injectors nearer the front of the engine than the affected one. Misfire.
If you cannot find any other cause, have a go at this. It is a DIY job with care,
