I had an idea that i would get hold of a decent series cahssis (2, 2a, 3) and retro fit the engine, gearbox, managment and anything else i could get away with from a Discovery.:)

Has anyone done this and what pitfalls can i expect to encounter?

Cheers,

ok after a bit of research i see that the driver side mount needs altering and that you can buy an exhaust to suit the conversion from Steve Parker, or you can modify your own. then its a case of finding the best way to mount the rad and the intercooler. apparently the 200 tdi engine bolts straight to a series gearbox.

sounds good!

so what are you actually doing?
a discovery td5 200 tdi injun into a series 2/2a or 3?

please keep us informed of developments. this will be interesting.

makes more sense to fit a fecking big V8 and make a stage one thingy.

My series 3 (Heidi) has a 200 TDi under the bonnet, but it's from a Defender, not a Disco. One of the main probs was cutting the corner off the intercooler coz it was in the way of the steering, which is above the chassis on a Series but below it on a Boinger. Got that bit done by a specialist. Had to move one of the engine mounts too, but that's easy enough. Biggest f***ing headache by far was trying to figure out why the throttle cable kept breaking (it was all to do with angles )
Good luck with yer project!

i was thinking originally a TD5, but came across information that the 200tdi engine works in a series. i will quickly add, i have no prior knowledge of landy modifying or conversion work, but i have always been very keen on cars in general and have had alot of fast/tuned cars. therefore i am not scared off by projects like this in, in fact i embrace them! something a bit different for sure.

i have neither a 2, 2a or 3, but intend to buy said. i tried to buy a 2a last year, it was a decent wagon, but the guy just wanted too much for it. at that point i shelved the idea ad concentrated on other things (rally car), but i notice he still has it there, so i think i may roll down there with cash on hip.

i want a classic landy, but am quite taken with the idea of the grunt and economy of a turbo diesel engine. i saw that the later model landys have the TD5 engine and since these are fitted to the disco's i thought it would be a possible swap, with the view to finding a smashed up disco as a donor vehicle.

my knowledge of landys is limited, but i saw the conversion with the with a 200tdi engine, (although i am guessing a 300tdi would work just as well?) and i wanted to know more.

at this here present we (anna my g/f)are having a farm out of some of the cars we have accumlated.

she has a toyota supra and an mr2 T-bar (which the supra replaced). i have a nissan 200sx and a renault clio. i also have a MK1 Ford Escort Rs2000 that i have been building for historic stage rallying, which is near completion.

basically speaking of the road specific cars, the Mr2, 200sx and the clio will be going.

that leaves Anna with the supra as her car. i am going to buy an approx 1999/2000 model BMW 530d estate to tow the rally car with (i have a trailer to take it to events).

We both like Land Rovers and come what may, we will get one in due course.

Anna commutes 40 miles round trip to work each day so she needs a decent car, but when i get the BMW it would be possible for her to sell her supra if she has had her fun in it by then and take on the BMW as her daily drive. i only buzz around the village and locally so it would be perfectly reasonable to drive a Landy on a daily basis. if that happened, i think the conversion to a modern diesel would be a great idea.

if i can get this 2a for the £1200 approx i think it is worth, it can be used as it is for the time being. i then will have a good basis to work from to do any subsequent project and if not, just a nice old classic landy.

With reference to the comments on fitting a v8, i really dont want the fuel economy that comes with it.
as far as i am concerned, for me at east, diesel is the future! :D

now for clarification - the 200tdi and 300tdi engines differ entirely or at least partly from the TD5 engine!??!

i think if its more pokey, the 300tdi engine is the way forward, but which vehicles (discos) were these fitted to? i am certain that the right donor disco can be had for a nominal amount.

thanks for the help so far chaps.

Well... they're all diesels... the TD5 is a new fangled electrickery thing that you can superchip. The 300 is an old fangled thing reworked with some finer tolerances and some electrickery so it's a little more refined than the really old fangled 200 which has no electrickery other than glow plugs and a lead to the stop solenoid on the injection pump.

It's not... both 200 and 300 are rated at exactly the same power and torque outputs. The 300 is a little quieter and smoother - trust me, you wouldn't notice the difference in a series 2a ;)

The 300tdi came with a different gearbox to the 200 - whether it will mate straight to a series gearbox or not I don't know - but I doubt it.

You can get a tatty 200ti disco for a pittance these days... £500 or thereabouts.

Cheers,

i am told that the 200tdi will bolt to the series box as a direct fit. but quite frankly if you have the whole car, you may aswell fit the 200tdi box into the 2a wholesale, along with the engine.

i like the idea of the 200tdi as it is simple and older (thus hopefully cheaper) and with no discernable power difference represents the best choice.

thanks fo the reply, that has helped loads.
