Is the selector ball at the end of the gear lever suposed to be floating around free in the box when I take out the gear lever?

I was replacing the bias plate due to a gate like stirring a bag of spanners but some sod had rounded of the heads, so when I took the gear shift plate off to get access to the bolts, the ball was left in the box.

Could this be the root of my gear shift woes?

Any info about how the ball engages in the box or with the lever gratefully received.

the yoke on selector shaft has ball in it held by snap ring and should move easily but not be sloppy ,if upright part of bias plate missing would give you sloppy stick and awkward gear selection,bolts will come out if you hit them enough to mushroom head and hammer socket on repeat till they come out

Ive got the bolts out now - thanks anyway.

The ball is not held in with anything that I can see - just rattles around in there like a marble in a saucepan.

Can you describe the snap ring for me?

In the end, the Bias plate wasnt bust, not the springs, so that was a red herring. Going to put new ones on anyway.

The ball Im talking about it the one that the gear lever slides into, that is held in the selector shaft.

I'm looking at the Rave manual now, and it seems I am missing a Railko Bush (whatever the f** one of those is).
It appear that mine has departed company from the selector rod and disapeared into the gearbox, leaving the ball to flap in the wind. :(
 
springs dont wear just plate breaks leaving nothing for springs to rest against ,in yoke is plastic socket with steel ball with hole in gear stick fits into if ball has fallen out gear stick will be sloppy as will it if 5 mm allen screw is loose holding yoke to selector ,there is no rialko bush in there ,
 
Theres nothing holding the ball in place in the yoke, so I am thinking that the plastic socket must have broken.
Dont suppose you have a picture of the ball in place in the yoke do you?
 
Cheers - I have taken some pics of the ball in position in the yoke.
There is loads of movement and I'm sure that there is something missing. The Rave manual definitely says there should be a Railko bush in there too. :(
I've taken a picture or teo - can I embed them here or do I have to put them offline?

OK - just seen your last post - I dont have that plastic part - its GONE! lol
 
the rave manual isnt necessarily a 100% not written by those that have had them to pieces,yoke has a plastic bush as in last pic and steel ball in that held by snap ring,ive got plenty if you need a complete yoke
 
The Yoke seems OK, and the ball and lever assembly too.
Its just the plastic bush and snap ring that are missing (probably at the bottom of the box somewhere :( )
Where are you based? Are you a parts supplier then?

ball must be missing unless stuck to bottom of gear lever Google Images should look like image .im in lincolnsire i do do parts but most recondition units for landies,i could send you one if you get stuck i get spares when converting from disco to defender box
 
The ball was sitting in the bottom of the yoke, held in place by the gear lever going through it. Perhaps I wsa just luck there - I wouldnt want the ball banging around in the box!
Do I have to take the yoke off to fit the bush? I'm guessing yes to be able to fit the bush and clip...

I'd need the bush, the spring clip and 4 new bolts for the bias plate. I was going to go get them from LR on Monday as I need the motor back running ASAP but in case they let me down (likely) I'll bear your offer in mind. Thanks :)
 
no problem ,it is easier with yoke off its 5mm allen key .yes you where lucky ive seen them in bottom harmlessly and through 5th gear not harmlessly,any 8mm x 25mm bolt will do bias plate has slotted holes so that when all together it can be adjusted to get gearstick in line with 3rd 4th gears when pushed to either side and let go ,fit springs with top of as been able to push stick further forward as you can with top off helps but leave bolts slack to adjust when top fitted

Couple more things while I think about it..
What gasket sealer should I use for the cover plate?
Is it acceptable (while I'm at it) to fill the GB oil through the selector hole? It'll certainly be easier than through the filler and I need to do it soon.

yes fill oil through there im all in favour of plenty of gearbox oil changes,rtv silicone sealant ,if using cheap one run bead round with finger to ensure it dosent break seal ,best to use are the ones that dont smell of vinegar as these tend to rust any bare metal near them
 
OK all parts aquired except the snap ring to hold the new buch in place. Ive even changed the oil (much easier through the open top of the GB!).
I've put Clinch nuts in where there used to be pop rivets so that will help for later problems.

I've dismantled and cleaned the Railko bearing on the main gear lever cover. Does this need any Lube?? It seems a little loose now.

Also, the bias springs are not in contact with the lever on the right side (5/R) until I really move it a lot to the right. There are grooves in the lever where the springs sit - is this wear, or locators? See Pic

Lastly, Theres a pair of wires with crimp ends that are coming out of the loom near the reverse light switch. They are not connected - should they be? See pic.

wires are for japan /american spec which have t/box temp switch,grooves inn lever should be welded up and ground smooth ,they are wear marks from springs and make changes less smooth as spring can snag, socket under bias plate has seal just under bias plate pushing onto ball,needs no lube gear box oil splashes up to it hence seal on top ,its not a rialko bush ,rialko is fibre resin bonded hard wearing bushing material ,the gear box ones are plastic and nylon, bias plate should hold lever in 3rd 4th gear alignment by positioning springs hence slotted holes in plate,although you can knock plate tab across with hammer and punch for fine tuning
