My TDI Defender is normally pretty reliable, but the other day she wouldn't start. Diesel was getting through to the injectors, engine was turning over fine, but she just wouldn't start. Even after an hour rest there was still no joy.

I went and bought an aerosol of Bradex Easy Start and squirted some into the air intake, the engine immediately started and ran fine for the rest of the day, and for the past few days there's also been no problems, either starting or running.

I did hear from a guy who's more knowledgeable than me (not difficult!) that it could be that the fuel pressure was too low.

Anyone any thoughts, and if this becomes a regular problem what might be the cost to put it right?

you can measure the fuel pressure by unscrewing the temperature sensor on the fuel pressure requlator and using a push fit compression tester, does it reach 4 bar and how quickly it does is important (should be immediate),

TD5 fuel system has high and low pressure sides, other than the fuel regulator located at the engine this is provided by the pump in the fuel tank.

If a new new pump is needed, go for OE. It's a pain in the arse job on the defender as the tank needs to come out (unless you cut a hole in the tub floor a' la disco).
