Td5 power loss

Hello, my name is Niels, I'm from Belgium and have got a question for you.
My defender 110 td5 2002 sometimes has a loss of power.
I have never had this problem in the morning when i drive to work, but when i leave my work in the evening i am struggling to get 45mph out of it. It accelerates very slowly. It kind off feels that it doesn't have turbo boost, i think. Then sometimes, when i stop for a traffic light, or to take a turn left or right, the lack of power is gone! Mostly it stays for like 5 to 10 minutes. I've already disconnected the vacum tube that controls the EGR valve, but it didn't help.
It also once happend that when i left at work, and again no power, that suddenly it was like the turbo pressure came up and kicked me in the back..
I hope someone here can help me out to find the cause of this.

In this case it sounds to me that the first thing to check really is your fuel system. Taking such steps as draining the bottom of the fuel tank, changing the fuel filters and maybe blowing out any rubber fuel hoses will get most of any dirt that's in the system, out of system. Also make sure all the injector lines are tight. I had a very similar situation at work and the cause of the problem was a leaky pipe connecting to the rail of the common rail fuel injection system. Now i'm not saying this will solve the problem because it could be anything! but it's worth trying. When hearing loss of power the first thing i think of as an Agricultural Engineer is the fuel system because it's vital for power ... Also make sure nothing is prevent air to access the air intake, you could also check the air filter i guess.

Hopefully this helps but if it doesn't let us know and i'm sure we'll find a solution

I'm gonna change the fuel filter next week so i'll see what it does then. But i noticed that when i take a fast turn to right with the landy, the power loss is gone too. Anyone an idea about that?

Maybe the filter on the bottom of the fuel pump is blocked?

How could that happen?

So i better drain the fuel tank or ride untill it is really empty?

When I took my fuel pump out to sort out an erratic fuel gauge reading the filter on the bottom of the pump had old leaves stuck to it ????? How they got there I dont know.
I was just making suggestions as to what may be causing you intermittent fuel blockages.

yep or condensation in the fuel tank.

In the case of many fuel pump failures there is a white snot like substance blocking up the mesh.

Alright, thanks for that! I'll take a good look at it when i'm going to replace my fuel pump, because the gauge is always saying it's empty.

Sorry to hijack your thread, its just I have a very similar problem on my 02 td5 defender. I have exactly the same symptoms! However along with these symptoms I dont have an eratic fuel gauge but an eratic tempreture gauge??!?!? It has got to the point where it is suffering serious power loss and even started overheating but you cant tell because the temperature gauge is all over the place!! Pretty sure there is more too it than fuel .... any ideas?? cheers

Go validate that all jubilee clips on the turbo hoses are tight. You may be suffering loss of turbo pressure via leaking hoses..

head gasket, cracked head

Had a loss of boost after droppin the gear box off to do the clutch everything ran fine just no turbo oh n clouds of black smoke it turned out to be the hose from the egr valve to the intercooler had come off at the intercooler due to a loose hose clip

Ps its on a 02 td5 110 defender
