TD5 Oil lamp and rattle neither can be turned off !

Anyone offer any advice on my TD5 Discovery 2, the oil lamp has come on and a rattle that sounds more like a chain than a bearing when running, I think it was run about 100 yards, what is the best way to fix it and what is needed ?

Oh dear.
I cannot be sure but this may be the dreaded chain pulley in the sump for the oil pump. The bolt comes loose, simple as that.

I will confess straightaway that I have never done the job, I should have checked it but it has been OK for me over 80 K odd so have just been lazy.

The link I put up may tell you but as far as I know you have to take the sump off, find what has bust, if anything, replace the bolt after cleaning it and the threaded hole it goes into, putting some locktite on it and doing it up to the correct torque, then replace the sump.
If you switched off fast enough you may well get away with it, if not there will be evidence in the oil that you take out of the sump. It is of course totally possible that you will have done damage to the crank and bearings but you will only be able to measure that by running it with an oil pressure gauge connected somewhere. Unless you strip the crank and bearings out to check them with micrometers etc.

Jack frame up as high as you can and let axle droop. Oil drained, sump off, change bolt with locktited new one, clean block/sump mating faces, new gasket (and rtv for 2 little bits iirc) refit sump, refill oil

But if its rattling the chains probably jumped at least, you say 100yds driven? Hopefully the sprocket hasn't completely come off and destroyed bottom end. Check oil filter for metal first, take sump off and check bottom end for damage. Take rocker cover off as well and check in there. If chains come off you'll have had oil starvation.

If chain or sprocket is damaged, the timing chains gotta come off i think cuz there's no split link on the oil pump chain, happy to be corrected tho its been a few years since I was inside a td5 bottom end 😜

Just check the filter and crack the sump off, at least you know where you are with it mate. If you're lucky like @backinblack was, its not too bad.

Its not fun on the drive sump removal but I did it in a day with loads of tea breaks and head scratches. Seem to remember the key was getting the axle to hang as low as possible to get sump to clear. I may have even undone bottom shock bolt one or both sides to lever it down a little bit further. Its all a bit of a blur now😅

Is it your daily driver or have you got a back up?

So hopefully bearings are ok and camshafts ? and if the chain is still fitted at the top end (would this be from the crankshaft ? I only need to refit the sprocket and lock the bolt back in ? can you recomend a good spares supplier as I used to use Rockingham LR but they have closed unfortunately

My current backup is a bicycle, which can be a little problematic when it comes to pulling a trailer 🤣
