TD5 Fuel line to fuel pump clip

Hi everyone

My noisy TD5 fuel pump mystery continues. I know its not the pump (Ive replaced it 3 times including a VDO one) - the new one is quiet for 24 hours then goes noisy again.
Ive replaced the fuel filter and checked the air bleed filter (the fuel filter housing was replaced a month or so ago).

I'm now going to replace the fuel line from the fuel filter (air bleed and LP feed) to the fuel pump (number 7 and 9 on the TD5 pump diagram) as I can pull off the connectors from the fuel filter housing without having to push down on the clips. Anywhay its not too expensive and an easy job. However the replacement fuel didnt come with the clips that go into the filter. Ive got some when I got the new fuel filter.

My question is, what is the best way to put the clips on. I see on one youtube video where the clips are put into the fuel pump and then the fuel line is pushed in and there are 2 clicks, which means its secure. And Ive also seen someone just pushing them on.

Anyone got any vews on this or done it themselves?

If this doesnt solve the issue Im going to replace the gasket and small filter on the FPR vale (I replaced that unit last year).

The high pressure feed connection line from the pump to the engine is pulsating so that wil be the next step.

I replaced fuel lines on mine but this was several years ago so I don't remember exactly what I did. However, I remember they came rather like yours, with the clips in a separate bag. I don't remember it beign a major problem - I just pushed them together in the same orientation and using the same colours as the pipes I was replacing. Obviously, I watched carefully what happened when I turned the ignition on and went through the purge sequence, and started the engine, to check they weren't popping off as the fuel got up to pressure. They've been OK for a number of years now, so it must be one of those things that's hard to get wrong. I'm quite impressed that little springy bits of plastic and O rings can keep everythign together and leak proof with 60psi fuel pressure, but it seems to manage.
 
Well I replaced the fuel lines from the fuel filter to the pump and surprose surprise the noise is still there.

The only thing left to look at is the engine side of the fuel system. I replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator a couple of years ago and doesnt leak and there is no dip in performance or starting, but its the last thing left to check.

Ive got a gasket and o ring kit and my thinking is that there may be something in the small filter that goes into the block from the FPR - its a long shot but I ve got to try. The fuel line to the pump to the FPR is pulsating and we think that thats were ht eissue is. Any suggestions welcome!

Ive changed the pump 3 times in the last 6 weeks so it can't be the pump!! I even fitted a genuine VDO (which turned out to be faulty). The funny thing is when I fit a new pump its quiet for a day and then get noisy.

As I said, any suggestions would be welcomed

I am a long way form an expert on the td5 but I thought in a defender you could just hear the fuel pump in a td5 and that was normal. It is sudden changes in the noise that are worrying not just being able to hear it? unlike the discovery there is not as much sound proofing and structure between you and the fuel pump so you expect to be able to hear it. As long as everything is performing well I would not be worried about it personally. you could hear the fuel pump in my td5 but performance was unaffected so it made no difference to driving it.
 
I'm going to put my nuts on the block by suggesting it's air in the fuel lines. My lads TD5 90 had this, and we bled the lines via a fuel pressure tester, screwed into the fuel temp sensor port. The diesel we released was foamy, due to the amount of times we tried to run the purge routine. Just a suggestion.

Mine was noisy when new and for a few years. You could hear it easily, even 20 feet away.
Got a bit quieter now son's D2 is quieter but you can still hear it.

That was exactly how mine was and I thought just what you expect from a td5.

It did cure the starting issues at the time. But a few weeks later we also replaced the starter motor, fuel lines, filter housing, FPR and gasket. The sodding vehicle is a gift that keeps on giving.
