I’m worried about replacing the fuel filter on my TD5. It’s not the actual replacement itself but the priming and starting afterwards. Any tips before I give it a go?
fill filter as much as pos before fitting, start it hold throttle half open till your sure its purged, if it wont start switch ignition on press throttle pedal 5 times fully till engine light flashes leave for 5 mins then try and start if not repeat
I found the priming process above not too bad, filled the filter up. I’ve read some people fill it 2/3 diesel 1/3 redex, I’m not sure what the benefit is there or the potential pit falls so I just used diesel.
I switched the ignition on and left it for about a minute, turned it off for a bit, did the same whilst pumping the pedal a few times then she started first time. Good job, my mate was filming me and would have ripped me for weeks otherwise.
Filled the filter with diesel, screwed it in, let it prime and it started first time.
I was really worried about doing the filter cos my colleague tried to do his and I’m not sure what he did wrong but his car ended up being transported to a garage...
Replaced mine today, my fuel pump was whining loudly over a few days and I thought the pump was on its way out. Recently had head gasket and turbo replaced and it wasn't performing as it should, so gave it a shot of cataclean which improved it somewhat. The cataclean must have cleaned loads of shíte out which ended up in the filter. Anyway, changed it today and the pump is much quieter and a very noticeable performance improvement.
To clarify the purge cycle - ignition on (pos 2) allow pump to prime, pump pedal 5 times and purge cycle begins. (Primes 5 times). No need to fill filter with diesel.
