I was doing a general service of changing fuel filter.
Started drove 10m & stopped. Realising it was air in the system, I have tried to prime it (iginition key in pos. 2 pum runs, repeat twice, trying cranking engine with throttle depressed) All that happens is it turns other but won't fire. Change back to original filter, filled it, checked pump is pumping fuel but nothing.
Any ideas?
I was supposed to be watching the Landy Safari today

Disconnected fuel in at fuel block connector - ok
& also out outlet to fuel cooler also ok.
And then the casting broke when re-conecting the fuel cooler line.
Major Bummer!

unlucky with the casing. to prime td5 you need to switch on the ignition on and depress the accelerator 5 times before the engine management light goes out. you will hear the pump start up and the em light will flash until ready. this can take 5-10mins especially if you put the filter in empty. good luck mate.

It can sometimes take up to 10 purge cycles (3 mins each) to clear the excess fuel from the system.

Did you fill the new filter up with fuel before fitting it? By doing this it can knock it down to just 1 purge cycle.

First time round i didn't fill the filter with diesel. Doh!
I have reverted to the original filter. The new filter (britpart) looks different to that of original. On the inside of the original (looking though the thread) there is a white plastic disc. The new filter doen't have it - is this a disco filter????
Looks like I need to repeat the process a good few times.

Steer clear of Britpart fuel filters on TD5's. They are known to be trouble.

Disco and defenders use the same filter. Is the disc on the bottom or on the top?

I'm guessing it's on the bottom. If it looks like a bottle top with a spout/pipe coming off it, it's a water drain valve. TD5's are originally fitted a with water sensors on the bottom of the filters. This is a big plastic block with 2 wires going to it. Many people get shot of this and use the bottle top type instead. The factory fit type love to bring on the management light.

Hey Ratty

It isn't the water sensor. With mine i noticed the wires were all twisted up. Obviously someone had replace the filter with it pluged in. Thus a wire was broken. So yep chucked it and running with the white water drain. I have bought a new one for about a fiver on ebay. The white plastic is near the top, will get a better filter, but reluctant to change it from the greath a simple job has given me. On the good side - oil, filter centifugral oil, coolant & the squealing aux belt were all change before hand. Fuel was last job.

I haven't seen one with white plastic on the top.

Cheers Ratty
Back up and running. one simple mistake not to be repeated.
turn key and once fuel pump stops running, dab throttle 5 times & fuel pump will kick in for a number of times. Once it stops repeat this 10 times.
Needed a booster pack to help get it going, but yep it works!
