The td5 is a very good engine if serviced correctly. Gearbox swap? Hard to say but tell me where reverse is on your vehicle. If it's bottom right you have an R380 box which was what td5s had fitted. If reverse is top left it'll be an LT77, standard fit to 91 defenders.

td5 is an unusual engine swap especially with the plentiful suppy of 200 and 300 tdi's...
It’s down to the right, I want to make sure everything stays running well and maintained, what oils need topping up and changing ?
Is it an upgrade? He didn’t tell me why it was done, it was done before he had it. He fitted the disco transfer box. I have been an old Vw guy for awhile so this Land Rover stuff is all new to me

It's a bit more in depth than a tdi swap as there's ECU and gauges to swap, the transfer box swap is a common upgrade and easily done.
Okay thanks, what gauges , as I think I have the original ones but like I said I’m very new to it all

Are you sure it's a td5? Usually you have to swap all the gauges ie speedo, fuel and temp from another td5 for everything to work.... If in doubt put a picture on here

We need a pic of the engine to know for sure.
My 1992 has a digital speedo from a TD5 defender, so you can’t assume it is a TD5 based on that alone.
Looks like the TD5 to me.

My son has a TD5 D90 with a Disco transfer box. Good combination IMHO. Makes it much more driveable over long distances.

Download RAVE as well (search for a link). Service it regularly using good quality oils and filters. Check the ECU red plug for oil deposits each service and replace the injector harness if you find any. Keep the coolant level correct and don't let it overheat - bear in mind that the temp gauge is fed from the ECU and will show mid point over a wide temperature range. By the time it shows an overheat it may be too late. Fitting a direct coolant gauge is a good plan. OBDII scanners don't work with TD5s and diagnostic tools that do are expensive, but a worthwhile investment.
