Good Morning,

This is my first post so please be patient.
Here is the problem so far.
I have a Defender 1999 TD5 Heritage Edition. It was on my drive ticking over a couple of weeks ago and all of a sudden just stopped. About a year ago I replaced the fuel pressure regulator along with the wiring harness to the injectots.
Convinced there was air getting into the fuel system (i now know this to be wrong) I replaced the copper washers and O rings on the injectors. still no joy and then I replaced the fuel pump (not a nice job) and still no joy. I then gave up and called the AA. They sent out an independant garage. The fault reader threw up `Top side switch failed pre injector`. The chap told me it was the ECU had failed.
I then got in toch with a main dealer. I gave him the reg number and he sent me a brand new ECU but as far as I can make out it is a NNN type and my old one is a MSB type. The independant came out and input the new injector codes but nothing. It would not start. They have since recovered it back to their yard. They tell me they have reset everytyhing but they still can not get it to start. They say they can not get any power to the accelerator.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

First things first.

Sorry your having issues, but dont worry your in the right place. :D

This forum is a little "different" from your usual forums. People will tell you how it is. :lol: but with the "openness" of this forum comes alot of knowledge and expertise.

One of the first things you want to do is to find the "introduce yourself" section. Its only polite ;)

Use the search button to check if your problem has been covered before, it probably has ;)

Then after that you will want to post your question in the defender section, you will get a better response rather than in the general section.

There is indeed an issue with oil leaking from the head down the injector harness and into the ECU under your seat. First thing to check is the yellow plug coming out of the head, front left of the engine block as you look at the engine from the front, under the plastic shroud. I imagine in your case it will be full of oil. If this is the case then you can replace your ECU as many times as you want, but it will slowly seep in and give you issues. you need to replace the injector harness and get the oil out of your wiring.
 
Good morning and thank you for the quick response. I did replaced the injector loom about a year ago.

I will ask the garage to check the immobiliser. Does anyone know if the immobiliser cuts power to the throttle ?? Also does anyone know if this later Ecu is ok on this earlier defender

Will it turn over and fire if you turn the ignition to P3??

If it does

Before you do anything else unplug the BLACK ECU plug turn the ignition on to P1 and check to see if you have a voltage at pin 33

I'd almost be prepared to put money on there being no voltage there if it's just cut out or refuses to start.

If this is the case the problem is the immobiliser and is fairly simple to fix PM me for details if this is the problem ;)

Hi Yes the enigne will fire once when you turn the ignition onto P3 but will not start.

I will ask the garage to test for power on pin 33.

I wish I had it back now as I am sure with this forum I could get it going again.
