I was thinking that but I've heard of number 2 going as well
To be honest I am not sure what causes the crack and I am not sure anyone knows 100%, the injector pocket certainly should not wear as the injector doesn't move, i always back mine off 1 full turn. I wonder if the copper washers start to blow and allow the gasses from the cylinder to pass so when it fires you get a huge shock pulse back into the rail which is full of liquid and only has small delivery ports to release the shock.That's is very interesting

Mine clatter when slack, I tried 1.5 turns and then went back to 1being too slack won’t hurt anything to be fair
The photos above show the pocket damage and the rip off merchant had filled it with steel putty and then oil so it couldn't be seen until I had got it home and clean

I had a guy weld it up then machined it back on the cnc at workI'm sorry to hear about the ebay experience, I'm finding more of that, I have bought parts which turned out to be scrap.
The repair looks neat what did you do?
By the way my defender had an aftermarket head when I bought it, not certain but I think it had suffered an injector pocket crack.
I always anneal the copper washers before fitting, softening then then cleaning them up helps.

Sorry should have mentioned, I bought the brit part ones but the ones with a G in the part number, take the washers and one by one hook them on some wire, hold them in a gas flame until they go dark blue, dont overdo it they can melt, soon as the get dark blue plunge them into cold water. Then I put them on a soft smooth flat piece of wood and polish off any of the oxide on the surface using solvol autosol polish and a soft cloth.I had a guy weld it up then machined it back on the cnc at work
When you say anneal it I take it you heat them up to soften them up
And looking at that last link these are a labour of love and your work you have done proves it
My old 200tdi defender never missed a beat really wish I'd never sold it but the disco is a good drive when it's right
It's done 218k so it's not done bad really my issues are compounded by getting stung it wasn't a lot of money it was the principal and the guy is still on there trading.
I'll just have to suck it and see with my repair and get the old one done just in case.
Would you leave the injectors at one turn or 1 1/4 perhaps
