Hello,

if anyone of you saw my other recent cross member thread then apologises for repeating.

Anyway, i've gotten completely confused;

My 90 is a 1986 4c which started life as a diesel and converted to v8 in the early 90s (1992 i think is on the receipt)

However, the rear cross member has the large hole for the trailer plug, something which i believe is TD5 onward. I've recently sanding back to bare metal and painted the rear half and it hasn't had a replacement cross member fitted. So i think this leads to two options;

1) This trailer socket/ plug hole was an option for 1980s models. Does anyone know about this?
2) More of the chassis has been replaced that just the rear cross member. Probably an entire chassis considering there inst a seam.

The 2nd doesn't seam likely because the guy who owned it from the 90s to 07 kept paperwork for everything and the chassis was looked after - waxoyl is everywhere! From 07-now i think it was just used off road as no tax since 07 and the rear cross member is knackered and it looks like no effort on maintenance.

The vin number on the brake master lines up with the v5, and so does the engine number so i doubt there is anything suspicious going on.

The vin no. should be stamped into the chassis somewhere right? That'll probably tell me something.

This below inst mine, but it shows the socket what i'm talking about.

Thanks!!

Chassis number is on the right hand side of the front chassis leg.
Observe it by sticking your head in front of the front wheel.

I remember we bought a new 90 in Aug 1985, and, IIRC, it had the same "hole" in the rear cross member - and was used for the same thing - until I got fed up with it, and moved the 12N socket to a bracket on the "anchor".... ( which, I presume, is why I remember it ) :)

I spoke to Richards chassis and they said the socket hole was there on the early 2.5 petrol and 2.5 na and then disappearing before reappearing in a different guise on the td5. So yeah it's the original cross member.

Now I have to decide wether to lose the hole with an upto td5 cross member or fit a td5 one, which would require changing the towing equipment.

As Pressbrake and JM say I think you are looking at either an original vehicle which has a lot of TD5 bits on it or it is in fact a TD5 with a V8 fitted. Probably not what you want to hear but I think I would be tempted to do a bit more research and investigation on the vehicle identity before you forking out a lot of cash on it Plastic interior fittings can often be a good identifier of a vehicle age as they sometimes have manufacture dates moulded in to them. What sort of speedo is fitted (mechanical or 'electronic?) and are the warning lights bulbs or LEDs?

Oh it's definitely an early 90. The interior is basically a step up from a series. Mechanical speedo & warning light bulbs and has richards said the early 90s had the socket hole

Thats not a early crossmember with the military electrics hole it is td5 even the towbar is td5....I know these things!

I trust you do, I'm just relaying what Richards chassis said.

So if you're certain it's a td5 cross member that means it's a td5 chassis. Any other give aways?

The fuel tank is under the driver and I don't remember seeing any mounts in the rear

Your chassis is td5 as i can tell by the fuel tank bracket holes and so is the tub , so I would say your vehicle is not the same as the logbook you have

Oh blimey! - So, do I remember the "hole" in the cross member being on the other side on our 90 ? - or is my memory completely flaky ( and this might be quite likely ! :eek:)

:)

I always thought the older ones had a hole like that, not sure of the side , but it was for the PTO.................

But then again, I may well be mistaken.

Cheers
