Afternoon,
I've got a 2005 90, with a tuned up Td5 and have a wierd intermittent clutch slip problem... some days it doesn't slip, and some days it does (sometimes a lot). Usually when it does, it's when you're hitting the power band, and I can't get it to slip with the handbrake on etc like you would with a normal, worn out clutch (it was only replaced in 2010, about 4/5k miles ago). It's been happening for a while but my local garage at the time couldn't figure it out.
After doing some research on the net, I found someone had the same problem and it was to do with the common Td5 fuel pressure regulator problem, with diesel leaking down the back of the engine and down the driver's side of the bell housing. Looking under my 90, I can see it's quite damp around that area...
So I reckon diesel could be leaking from here, and a small amount getting into the bell housing contaminating the clutch, causing it to slip when under heavy load, then once very hot ie a long journey; burning off so it doesn't slip anymore thus being intermittent.
What do you guys think to this theory? I've looked into the FPR leak, and there's mixed feelings on either replacing the whole FPR unit because the unit can wear, or just the O-rings and gasket because some say it's just those that go? I'd rather spend a tenner on an eBay replacement seal kit, but don't want to waste my time taking such a fiddly thing apart then it not work lol.
Cheers in anticipation!
