Hello there, my 2000 TD5 auto is not going into first gear. No warning lights or anything, seems to be pulling away in second?? and when going everything appears to be working properly.
The oil condition and level is fine, and every now and then First seems to engaging briefly when stating to move then a 'clunk' as it goes into second. I fear a mechanical problem in the box but would like to know if anyone has any ideas ? Thanks in advance for any help and ideas.

Have you checked the XYZ Switch Gear Selector?? And the transmission Oil! As sometimes the two are connected!!
I.e. the oil level is not high enough to engage the selector?

Thanks for the reply Badger. Yes the oil level and quality are fine. I haven't touched the XYZ switch yet. Everything seems to be fine except getting into First. So in D instead of starting in First I seem to start in Second and then the other gears seem to change as expected.. So I'm currently thinking the XYZ switch is OK because D and R seem to work. I was wondering if somehow the transmission cable to the XYZ switch may need an adjustment ? but haven't yet found any info on that.

It's a very fine balancing act! I had the same problem not so long ago?? Had to take it to a garage with a pit! To fine tune the XYX switch!!! 2 ppl job! And spent about 1/2 hour getting it righto_O if that does not work? You will have to weigh up the cost  another td5! Taking the risk! Or New XYZ switch ££££££ or from fleabay? Lot less pennies!!
I was lucky!!

Uh oh...!!! My future may not be as bright as I was hoping. How did you fine tune the XYZ switch, was it by adjusting the gear changing cable length ? I'll try a search for adjusting the XYZ as I haven't focused on that yet. Thanks a lot BTW, appreciated.

switch is on slotted holes so if bolts loosened can be rotated

Sealey do an alignment tool available quite reasonably on the internet and worked nicely for me when I replaced my xyz switch recently. On the other hand, the switch was rather pricey :(

Will need a second person in the car to see if all gears are engaged!
Good luck
Good thing about Landyzone! Help is a thumb away hahaha

That’s great gents, thank you very much for all that. I read, then read then read again and give it a shot. Hope this is all it is

An addendum after moving on. I never thought about checking the lights on the Gear Selector, thanks, so I did. With my Nanocom I can see that as each light illuminates when changing gears then the XYZ settings also change. So it looks like the XYZ switch is working as expected. However the Solenoid valve settings do not chage for any gear change. They are Solenoid valve #1 OFF, Solenoid valve #2 On and Solenoid valve #3 Off.
These do not change for any of the gears selected including Reverse. Should they change ?? It looks like my problem could be elsewhere I think now but where...!!! Thanks in advance for any ideas and help.
Good grief...I have error code "P0748 Pressure Regulator Monitoring (S/C To Ground Or O/C)" which looks like an electrical connection issue. Wonder where that could be ??

I've just noticed that the waning lights for 'S and M' Mode don't come on when the ignition is turned on. I've check the fuse F12 under the bonnet and the Fuse in the cabin and both are OK and both have power.

My previous info was incorrect as I now know the autobox is not locking into 4th gear. I think it's only working in Reverse and Third...!!!

Now it's even more interesting...!!! I checked the BCU and it was set to Petrol/Manual instead of Diesel/Auto..!!! When did that happen...ha ha ha. So after changing that I now have flashing 'S and M' lights, the gearbox will go into Reverse and Drive. I can physically put it in 3,2,1 but the indicator lights stays on Drive. Now back to reading.......

I wonder if this was done to mask a problem?

Now I'm getting P0705 and P0748. I wonder if I'm back to considering the WXYZ switch.

It's very strange indeed. I've had the car for 6 years now and the gearbox has had an oil and filter change but worked very well. No idea why or when the BCU could have been set to a manual petrol.....that's a mystery.

This is Limp Home Mode.

This sounds like the classic symptoms of a broken/chafed loom where it goes around the transfer box. There is loads of information on here (somewhere:)) about this. I would follow the loom from the WXYZ switch, particularly around the P clip. Sometimes it is hard to see.
