On the last couple of tanks of diesel I've only been managing 18 MPG, my trips only consist of back and forth to work, a round trip of about 4 miles, plus a long motorway journey of 200 miles. I'd be expecting at least 23, possibly 25 MPG. My old worn out 1966 S2A 2.25 Diesel used to do 26 MPG no matter how I drove it :)

Any obvious Td5 things to check? AFM...Diagnostics etc...

If its only two miles to work why not walk or cycle and save a few quid.?Short trips will kill your fuel economy and yer exhaust wont last 5 mins cause of the conden forming in it.

true,, i would also check the air filter, but the mpg an,t great with the auto, i know, i have one, you should try towing with it,,, i am thinking of chipping mine and putting bigger intercooler on, the td5 is a nice engine but all the power come,s in in the upper have of the rev range, so by chipping it you could bring the torque to the lower rev range and in turn save fual.

You're running it cold most of the time, so consumption will be bad. Even so you should get about 25mpg. EGR might help, otherwise stuff like air filter. Not sure if pump timing is adjustable, but if so that could be checked on a diagnostics machine. Taking the fan off would help it warm up quicker (see current fred on this topic)

got 410 miles beofre light came on cost £86 to refill only 81 litres, which must have meant there was still 14 litres left in the tank, so surely would have got 510 miles to dry.

Thats 23.5 mpg, although 60 of those miles were done in 3rd gear at over 3,000 revs! Doh! And put my foot down a little bit, mixed traffic and 75 on mototwarys.

Ok after a few more tanks, I only get 400 miles till light comes on, mixed driving, 35 mile commute daily included. Thats not great at all, much less than I expected, apart form that I love it.

Done over 300 miles and and mine's only just got to the half. Begining to wonder if the needle is stuck or has the TD5Alive remap made that much difference.

Hi I can't better 22mpg with my td5 auto thats with egr bypass and re-map,thinking of going back to V8?

Cheers

Initially when I got the TD5 Auto and having no experience of autos prior it worked out to do 22 mpg but after a full service and EGR disposal and paying attention to how I drive it now average 28-29 mpg ( Hills all around me ) and on a long run at 60 -65 mph ( Boot fully loaded ) managed 34.6 mpg. Saying that on short journeys and with the boss drivin it drops to 25-26 mpg.
I think a lot of it is how heavy your boots are, but I can see why as it makes a great sound at 3000 rpm.

Like Pastmaster says, you are running cold which is when the engine is at its worst and the oil at its thickest.

Check your air filter and when your fuel filter was last changed, also check you have the right oil in the car. As your oil never gets to full operating temp it'll be worth you using the 5w-30 oil recommended for the TD5.

I think im getting about 25-26 and thats even when doing longer runs. Hoping to get a remap, which i hope will help. bugs me a bit when i get stuck behind someone at 50 and it wont kick up a gear to drop the revs. Having said that i notice after a few minutes it does eventually kick up. I dont drive it hard which i guess helps. Thats is not until ive had the remap.

Do you have a heavy right foot by any chance? I have (or did have) and I have gone from 20mpg to about 28mpg on reasonably short journeys (15 miles) and from 24mpg to 37mpg on a good long run (over 100 miles). Was very surprised what a difference it made.

Sorry to disagree, but no diesel engine sounds great, especially the more it revs.

I get 900km before the light comes on (TD5 Auto). Servicing up todate, careful right foot and as much cruise control as possible. I used to drive too fast before I got the Disco, now I arrive alive, having enjoyed a stress free journey.
