Td5 Auto Fuel consumption

Hi, I have just done approximately 1500 miles since changing my belovered 300tdi for a 2004 td5 es premium. The car is far superior with just one disappointment, my 300 would return 30mpg on a regular basis, the td5 if I really drive steady only returns 21mpg. Is this pretty standard or should I expect more, if so any ideas what the problem may be. Kind regards John

Around town / short runs I get around 28mpg and on a run it goes up to around 35 mpg. As you go over 60mph then fuel economy suffers. Check the usual suspects of tyre pressure not correct and that the brakes aren't binding. A new air filter might help

I have exactly the same model and get roughly 22 on average - had a petrol V8 97 before and had hoped to get 30+ when I swapped, especially in the current climate.

My TD5 ES Auto gets around 27mpg average over a tank, do a fair bit of city driving around southampton and its constantly stop start. On motorways, do 65 -75 depending on how much time i have. Don't use the AC much, only when its really hot. If you don't want to use the actual AC, press the ECON button and it turns the compressor off, and just uses the outside air temp and blowers to change the inside temp. Not sure how much the AC drops the mpg, but it would increase it thats for sure.

I have an 03 es auto and swapped from a 300 tdi and have found the same sadness in fuel economy. I have now "learnt" how to drive it, done the egr and pipe etc and get a steady 25 ish. its better but not amazing.

Have you read LRO this month? they reckon each 100 kilos off weight removed will give you 1.6mpg better fuel economy.

I have thought about this and when you consider all the extra kit on es models and the weight of posh HK speakers it makes it better to justify.

I am not convinced by the td5 auto at all and am changing my es auto for a GS manual a to save weight but have less thing to go wrong. I will let you know how I get on and if fuel economy gets better.

Fok me you need a website to work out how much fuel you use What exactly does that site tell you that a monkey with an abacus couldn't work out for himself.

23mpg if I drive like a "normal" person. Up to 35 on the motorway at 60mph on cruise control. Bog standard TD5 auto with egr done - no aircon. Consumption is slightly better on biodiesel or BP Ultimate. Get it serviced by someone who knows what they're doing, change filters. Might help to change the axle/geabox oil as well - it's usually pretty horrible. Use the cruise control whenever you can. I reckon if you get less than 23mpg there's something wrong with your car or your driving.

My 2001 td5 manuel has had most things done to it ,egr removed ,chipped ,large intercooler ,removed viscos fan,removed centre box and I've now tryed magic! one of this magnets on the fuel line . With the wife driving it daily over the hills to work it now is doing 33mpg but when I drive it that drops considerably (to much fun) . My point is that it seems to have a big difference on fuel consumtion depending how big your boots are! Diesel starts to make bottled water look cheep TeHe

if only u could run them on water!!

Removing the fan, so long as you don't tow and your rad is OK, is certainly an option. It'll warm up quicker and once warm you'll get fractionally more power OR better consumption.

Removing the fan from the front of the rad won't make a blind bit of difference to your warm up speed. The thermostat doesn't cycle the coolant until the engine is completely warm anyway, neither does the fan blow on this static water.

Sorry should of been more specific. I removed the viscous fan and replaced it with an electic kenlow fan . Just in case she may get hot . They do advertise up to a 10% mpg saving by taking off the big propeller from the front of the engine and it has worked to a degree. Has anyone else tryed the black magic of a magnet on the fuel line. I haven't had it long enough to pass on a good or bad report but will try anything once

Ahh I see I didnt read properly haha. yeah actually you're right I think those big fans will draw a lot of current. So you've found your kenlowe fan is good? Have heard good things about them.
