Td5 auto box pressuring

Hi guys my1999 td5 blew the pipe off the gearbox oil cooler pig of a job to sort out and after me doing that its now leaking from the cooler itself any ideas why the system should be over pressuring cheers

Not over pressure but an iffy pipe connection, therefore it was unable to withstand the
normal fluid pressure.

You Can always check the gearbox breather pipe isn't blocked too.

Cheers guys but I have done the pipes and now the cooler has split

The first thing I would be doing is to:

1. Check the fluid level in the autobox, using the correct procedure. Do this on a cold engine. If it's over full it is more likely to pressurise, especially if coupled with point no.2.

2. Check/test/clear the gearbox breather pipe - it sounds blocked.

Where is the breather please is it the small black pipe on top of the box? If so I can blow through that

It's so long since I've messed with an auto box I can't remember precisely but what I do know is that both breathers (gearbox and transfer boxes) terminate in the back end of the engine bay, terminating in a loop.

You may find that you'll need to cut the pipe off the gearbox spigot, clean out the spigot, then make sure the pipe is clear, then reinstall.

a blocked breather wouldnt effect oil pressure, if oil pressure was too high box wouldnt work correctly

Thanks as that, it alleviates any worries for me and other owners with an auto disco should a pipe pop its fittings.... heaven forbid...

But then checking such things is part of owner preventive maintenance, and is also part of LR s service schedule.

Now 27+ years with a LR auto without any auto box issues, and so from my experience with manuals Im able to say that if I had a clutch it would have been replaced by now, maybe a few times
