Evening all,
I have a year 2000 td5 defender with what i thought was a knackered alternator! For about 2 weeks, battery warning light was flashing on and off (occasionally) I realised battery wasnt being charged (voltmeter on battery), checked the obvious, spoke to landrover, they said it was alternator, I bought one, fitted it, then same problem, suggesting that alternator was fine and that some other problem is causing it, the lack of battery warning light is suspicious, no bulbs gone because there are no bulbs, some kind of circuit board with no obvious damage! Can anybody help me please? Ideas, suggestions or facts appreciated, starting to pull my hair out

Yup, pretty sure alignment of pulleys etc and belt is good, there is no bulb to blow in battery warning light on dash, but if alternator wasnt working there should be a battery warning light on, I'm sure its all connected. There has been some earthing / bad wiring issues with this vehicle in the past! With so many circuit boards, chips /engine computer etc it makes mechanics difficult! Any ideas

If the charge light isn't coming on anymore then whats the problem bud, does the battery keep going flat or something?

Sounds like a bad earth problem. Mine did the same, but worse. Headlights brightened up every time i had them on and applied brakes and battery light stayed on when indicating and using brakes...took hours of scratching around and checking every earth connection i could find...still dont know exactly which wire was the cause, but suspect the earth to the headlight circuit and the earth to the intrument panel.
