TD5 1999 90 defender won't start

The engine turns over but will not start if you tow start it,it will go. The fuel pump makes a horrible noise but delivery seems good (pressure not tested tho).Any ideas anyone had this fault any ideas would be appreciated thanks.
 
Further to this problem i have removed the fuel tank to find it heavily soiled inside i have drained and cleaned out the tank but yet to refit it and see if this sorts the problem.
 
If there is a bad noise at the rear end, try a new FUEL FILTER before spending big money.

I find that my TD5 Disco makes a bad loud noise when the filter needs changed.
