td4 whistling noise

Hi Freelander owners

I have recently bought a Freelander TD4 auto and have fitted one of roverrons synergy 2 tuning box which is great. However since fitting when accelerating hard it has developed a whistling noise. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is the cause.

Are you sure you didn't run over Roger Whitakker and he still trapped underneath your hippo somewhere ???
 
as an aside, might be worth checking all the intercooler hoses as they are prone to split/chafe and then cause a whistling sound.....

(especially the long one across the top of the front of the engine which rubs on the cover mounting near the dipstick

To avoid this as much as possible I checked in the past the whole enginebay and every place I saw an hose having a chance of rubbing on something else I put a piece of cut gardenhose inbetween as protection. The specific spot, on top of the head of the screw holding the inletmanifold, I put a piece of rubber inbetween.
 
Perhaps its now just a happy Freelander and whistling a happy tune!

Just waiting for my Synergy 2 to turn up sometime this week and hopefully I too will be whistling.

So what do you think Graham, is the synergy 2 really worth it? I have been umming and ahhing for months and finally decided that I NEEDED that clever box of tricks.

I used the old split hose on mine, secured with stainless steel cable ties, there's piccies in the gallery somewhere if you can find them (red td4 auto)
 
Hi Rainady

The synergy 2 is worth the money. It certainly gives the car some ooomph! My wife drove it, safely overtook a cyclist, and could not believe how quick it took off - the passengers were a bit surprised too. But seriously, I followed roverons advice, cleaned EGR valve and PCV valve. Also as EGR was so crudded up I removed and cleaned inlet manifold (very dirty). I have also just added millers Diesel Power Sport 4 fuel additive. We use our Freelander to tow our caravan - after years of towing with a 300 TDi disco (very slowly), we have found we have loads of power and hills are not a problem anymore. I would highly recommend the synergy 2. Do not be overly worried about black smoke first of all, as ron says it is just your exhaust being cleaned out by the extra power. My settings at the moment are MAF-OFF and running on setting No. 3. Hope you enjoy yours once fitted and let us know what you think. The whistling noise is not as bad now , I tighten the long intercooler pipe clips on top of the engine and will check pipes at the weekend.

Got the Synergy 2 today. Hopefully going to fit it tonight (weather permitting).
Ive got a quick question for you. The instructions talk about the intake air temperature sensor cable which I have identified in the Synergy 2 loom. But where did you install that sensor. Im sat at the office right now so cant really picture where that sensor is supposed to go.
Is it into the large airbox at the back of the engine or somewhere else.

Its the only bit I cant get my head round.

My air temperature cable at the moment is attached to the brakeline clip on the bulkhead behind the air filter box. (As instructions locate the air intake cable away from engine ,it doesn`t need to be in the intake air flow.)I may try fitting it into the air filter box at a later date.

Wow what a difference that little box of tricks makes.

Fitted the box without any problems. Took quite a bit longer to route the remote switch through the bulkhead.

And its made a huge difference the the performance. Got the box set on 10 at the moment but may tone it down a little because the power delivery is a bit 'off-on'.
I ran the air temp cable around the front of the airbox around the wiring for the injectors. Located it there based on the idea that fuel economy might be better if the air temp cable is in a warm place. I guess there wont be much difference.
All in all vey happy with the synergy 2. Thanks for the feedback Graham.

Wot probs, if any, has any one had regarding insurance for the car once Ron's box of tricks has been fitted? Considering fitting the box but thought insurance would be too pricey.
 
How sad - I'm replying to my own post :-( Anyway, this may be of use to someone else out there.

I've just arranged renewal of my insurance as it was due and have changed it to include the Synergy 2 mod from Roverron.
I have found the best quote was from Autotrader, they have kept the excess to a low £200 and one of the cheapest premiums and are fine about the modification. In fact they didn't seem that interested whereas the other insurance co.s all wanted to know exactly how much it increased performance and had bands for less than 10%, 10 - 20%, 20 - 30% and over. Some even asked for the name and looked at Ron's web site while I was on the phone. It has the potential to add approx 33bhp so around 28% extra (even though very few are likely to run it on the maximum setting) so hiked up the price quite a lot.
