hi all just come back from a holiday in cornwall and had problems when towing the caravan with my wifes freelander 04 hse td4 it was ok halfway down till the first stop then after that it was shaking/juddering quite bad like gearbox was shaking side to side we got there ok when not towing driving round cornwall it was ok back to normal! then coming home towing got the same shaking/juddering but with loads off black smoke under acceleration and the engine light with the(!) flashing on and off? anybody any ideas? thanks in advance

cheers, would that cause the shaking? it was bad like the gearbox shaking side to side, everthings fine when not towing

When you're towing you are likely to be asking for more power, which means the turbo is working harder.

A split turbo-hose may well be OK under say half load and a lower boost, but the split will open up when under greater boost.

Hopefully that's all that it needs - a set of new turbo hoses.

Or it could even be as simple as a Jubilee hose clip that has worked loose.

Get someone to hold the revs steady at around 2750rpm and check carefully at the rear of the long hose on the left, and the rear of the 90 degree bend hose which enters the EGR.

Check for splits that look as though they were made with a Stanley knife.

Singvogel.

cheers for the reply is the pipe near the radiator drivers side? on top as this as been bodged with tape! not realy got to know under bonet of this as wife only had it a few week and im more used to my discovery!

If it only happens when towing are you sure the caravans brakes are not sticking on.

That is one of the pipes you describe and the most common one to fail. I have tape round mine though holding a metal strip to prevent the pipe wearing through.

The long pipe is the one on the left as you view the engine from the front. There is a nasty positioned screw behind it which as Davidspect says can rub a hole in the pipe. I have a piece of closed-cell foam wedged behind the pipe to prevent this.

Tape has no chance of holding in the full turbo pressure. It could only be a very temporary 'get you home'fix at low speed.

cheers,no brakes not sticking on lol its ok when not accelerating or say going down hill with foot off peddle, just does it say over 50mph and over 2000rpm thats when it kicks black smoke out too

will check this pipe properly it has black tape around it and feels like its holding a strip of rubber under it so hoping this is the cause, when it first happened it was that bad it felt like the gear box mounts had gone as it was shaking side to side!

As mentioned the long pipe needs a little protection from the engine cover tab. Check the right hand one. Short 90 degree elbow mine split underneath looked like a Stanley knife cut exactly same issue black smoke bad vibration through engine hence drivetrain. About 3 quid for new hose.

What weight is the caravan? i get a little clutch judder when i need to do a hill start with the van on the back.

Hi it's not the weight it was fine when we towed it before and was fine half way down to cornwall till we stopped at services then it started, I've had a fault reader on it and shows no faults also no splits in any turbo pipes the one that is taped up is just for protection from rubbing the bolt underneath still kicking black smoke out under power and when u rev it at a standstill, had a look underneath and where the prop shaft enters back of gear box and the rubber gator has split all way round and gone in u can put ur finger in it so think this might be where the shaking is coming from when towing ,is it a new prop job?? Still not sure about the smoke??

did you check the hoses while someone revs too, they expand and in my case it was the only way to find the split, it was completly undetectable at idle,

Yeah my brother checked hoses while I did revs no splits all pressured up like they should so god knows why it's kicking black smoke out! Lol pritty sure it's the front prop going into gearbox that's causing shaking when under load
