TD4/TD4.e

Hello all, first post.

We've just put a deposit on a new XS TD4, part ex'ing our 06 previous model.

Just doing a few searches and only now learnt about the TD4.e across the board update coming out soon...

Any reasons really to worry that our new Freelander is suddenly going to be superceeded? We've had a reasonable deal, XS with XS style pack down to mid £22K - are the current deals on Freelanders because of the TD4.e coming out soon?

Is the .e anything to really put a buy on hold for?

I would guess that the .e would be a Eco version of the freelander, maybe with stop/start control or some other enviromental twaddle.

More to go wrong so stick with the one you have bought!

Freelander ERAD Hybrid
Land Rover is currently testing diesel-electric hybrids known as ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive). These prototypes based on the Freelander use technology as previewed in the LRX concept car, also on show at the British Motor Show.

The TD4.e has the Stop-Start technology, this gives it lower co2 figures, I don't know if it is enough to alter road tax or company car tax.
In practise you will probably have to be using it in heavy traffic to see ant fuel advantage. The stop-start only comes into play when you stop and select neutral.

tis only available on the manual as well - so if your XS is a an auto it doesn't matter.

Apparently there is an uprated battery and starter to cope with it - if you ask me it's bound to be problematic.

Leave it till it's tried tested and bombproof

It's the same system as tried and tested in BMWs, is it not?

My typical journey to work, bottom half of Hertfordshire to West London leaving at about 7am entails mostly slow moving traffic the entire route but hardly any traffic lights. Not once do I usually stop long enough to select neutral and apply the handbrake (auto tans) so even if the new TD4E was available in automatic, I wouldn't save any fuel, so I'm very wary of their claims. The system would probably annoy me so I'd switch it off. It does however enable the vehicle to qualify for the next lower band of road tax, so there's the advantage if you have no option but to buy the E model. Pretty sure it's the same system as used by BMW too.

I imagine the deals on the forecourt are more to do with the economic climate than any new model coming, a great time to screw them down on price then, if you are after finance screw the APR down with interest rates being so low. With all the trouble my Disco TD5 is giving me I'm tempted to get a new car with 0 on the clock until I think about the depreciation hit....

At least an electric motor can't blow a head gasket !!!
