hi guys..
the starter motor on my 05 plate TD4 seems to have thrown its hand in...
after pricing a replacement i came across an overhaul kit which compirises of the two contacts and a new plunger unit....

anyways, im prepared to give it a go for a tenner...
stripping the starter motor shouldnt be too hard onece ive got it off that is !!

can anyone offer any help/advice on how to remove the starter motor, ive had a look and can only see one fixing bolt at the front....cant see the others ? dont know where's best to access them from etc...

any help on removing the unit would be greatly apreciated..
as i said, when the units on the bench in front of me i should be able to strip it and rebuild following the instructions, but im not sure how to take it off because i cant see the other bolts/leads etc...

Done it on my 02 TD4 auto few years back - prob similar age to yours at the time. It it just clicking? If so it the metal contacts in the solenoid.

One bolt front and other is accessed by removal of battery box on an auto. It's just above gearbox on auto - I believe its a bit more accessible on the manual.

I got a long extension bar and some brute for to shift it - make sure you get the right bolt as you can feel for it but not get a visual on it.

Rest is easy - make sure don't damage radiator when removing.
 
I know this is a reply to an old post but I hope it helps someone..

I've just figured out how the Starter motor comes off of my 2006 Manual TD4.
It took me a hour and half to realise that the 2 fixings that hold the starter motor are different. You can quite easily see the bottom nut and bolt which is to the front, the top fixing is just a long bolt, the hole that this goes into, on the starter, is threaded.
It's easier to see if you remove the fuel pressure regulator, its just a hollow chamber, easy to remove and it gives you the chance to clean it up.(Haynes manual Diagramme 1.1 page 4B.3).
The bolt head can be seen under this at the right hand end, It looks like it bolts through the bell housing, surrounding the fly wheel. I used a socket and ratchet with the ratchet hanging down to get enough room to turn the bolt.
I repaired the Solenoid with a kit from Ebay, very easy and effective. This repaired the occasional fault of just a click instead of the starter turning.

Just done this with the solenoid kit from ebay as well, very simple to do, allow an hour but you could probably do it in 20 mins the second time.
disconnect battery, undo the bolt at the front of the starter that holds 2 power cables, unclip the small wire just above them, and as above only 2 bolts hold the starter on.
The one at the front is clear, a 4" bolt, 13mm one end and a 15mm nut at the other & holds the engine earth cable.
The second bolt was visable on mine just screws in to the starter it self.
 
OK problem solved. But new starting motor still not turning engine. Just clicking. Did notice the connection to the solenoid looked corroded. So will have a look.
