Hi all,

I have just purchased a 56 plate java black Freelander 1 TD4 with 80100 miles.

I have two quick questions about servicing. It has a full service history and was last serviced in Dec 14 at 73k. I have read conflicting reports on whether I should get it serviced now (as it has been 12 months) or wait till the next service millage point which I believe is 84k.

Secondly, can someone explain the pros/cons of getting it serviced at a Land Rover official garage compared to a non LR garage?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Best,
Dan

Hi Dan, welcome to the madhouse.

Servicing is mileage OR age, whichever comes soonest. So in this instance yes, a service is due. This should be clear in the service schedule that hopefully lives in the glovebox with the handbook. Reason for mileage OR age is that some items and fluids deteriorate with time regardless of use so all manufacturers adopt this approach.

As regards main dealer versus a good specialist, I put my faith in a good specialist every time. They aren't there as an incidental profit centre to sales, they are there solely to service and maintain vehicles. Most will, if asked source OEM parts (same manufacturer as the stuff sold by Land Rover, but in a plain / manufacturer carton and therefore not subject to the dreaded Green Oval tax that applies to any component placed in a LR box). Remember that LR assemble cars, they don't make the components! You'll pay a lower hourly rate, get lower cost parts from the same manufacturer and have some comfort in the knowledge that the independent needs to do a decent job to survive, whereas a ropy LR main dealer service department has a LOT of captive customers.

May be worth you ringing around local LR specialists like Challenger4x4 in Tongham, for example.

I always use an independent, and yes he does know his stuff, so as NoDosh says find a good one...cheaper, better
