td4 manual gearbox oil filler & drain plugs

Can anyone tell me what size torx bits to use to undo the filler and drain plugs on my td4 manual gearbox?

I've just done mine. It was an 8mm hex key socket. Make sure you can undo the filler/level plug first, if you undo the drain plug first then can't undo the filler/level plug your in trouble.

Yes both 8mm hex. Just make sure you can undo the fill/level plug first. I had my car over a pit when I did mine and found there was just enough room to get your hand with a ratchet up the side of the gear box to reach the fill/level plug.

You get to fill plug from the wheel arch. It's next to the NS drive shaft, halfway up the casing. There's virtually no way to reach it from above.

Thanks as long as don't have to drop sump guard off again. The gear oil was done I just want to check the level.

Is there enough room to change the gearbox oil whilst the car is on the ground?
Or do I need to be inventive and get the car up off the road?

I realise that the car must be level when refilling.

It's possible to change the box oil with the car on the ground.

Just bought two front driveshafts ones definitely gone so sod it !

Any heads up regarding that job ?
And how much oil will I need to change the gearbox oil ? 56reg td4 manual 122,000
Not much history but seems well cared for and any suggestions on the oil or is just best to stick to LR oil ?

and that's why we undo or try to undo the filler plug before hitting the drain. the person who got this TD4 gearbox filler plug out with a chisel and then put it back again will go to hell. or maybe it never came out. we will see once I've ordered a new one. grr.

Maybe some Engineer brand screw removing pliers or Vampliers would help you?

Access is a bit tight- I’ve ordered a set of stripped hex bolt removers may do the trick, otherwise that cut in the side looks hammer/chiselable

There's also a type like slip joint water-pump pliers which may fit in the space available. Hopefully that notch will be easily usable, though.

Happy to say screwdriver and hammer got the turn going and got it out.

As an aside a Sealy AK54 oil syringe is the perfect tool to refill the box - would have been a nightmare without.

The oil containers usually have a pipe in the lid. If you have a larger pipe the right size you can jam it on and use that to fill the gearbox, then just swap lids when the first is empty. I have a lid in the garage somewhere with the pipe already jammed on.

I'm going to be doing all the fluids on my FL2, now the engine is almost sorted (hopefully just an injector now). Unfortunately all the components that need oil changes, don't have drain plugs,

with the exception of the gearbox. This means I have no choice but to syringe the old oil out, before I can refill with fresh.

nice hack - access is pretty tight though and I wanted to make sure of the exact right amount -
4 x 400ml squirts were very satisfying

I got one of those little electric oil pumps from Lidl and they're pretty good. Drains diesel and oil no bother.
