Td4 Lack of power at 70mph - fixed !

Hi all,yes I had this fault and fixed it by changing the egr vacuum control filter at the back of the engine compartment £2.75 + postage,bargain.:)
 
This describes exactly the symptoms I have with my TD4 at the moment, overtake white van man on the flat then come to an incline, white van man passes me & thinks I am playing silly buggers. Have been ignoring the prob as I thought solution would be really costly, will check the items suggested in the posts, great info, thanks.
 
I've also the same (intermittant) symptoms, when it suddenly feels as though the brakes are being applied.
It can happen on the flat, but likes to do it as you start going up hill just as you start to pass others, but then no matter how hard you press down on the throttle, it just dies away - not so good when towing the caravan! It will quite happily speed up going down hill, but will struggle again at the next. When it does boost/kick-in, it kicks out a fair bit of smoke, but goes as it should.
I've replaced a hose and the MAF sensor, but with no luck... And I will be giving your suggestion a try!​

I have an 06 plate Freelander TD4 Auto and have had the exact same problem for months now. It's been through 3 mechanics who all get an engine fault code of P1470 but have not been able to resolve it.

I looked under my car but could not see the solinide or the turbo?? Is it in the same place on an 06 plate FL? Ive got the one with the rounded part of the headlamps.

Ive had a mechanic look at it and he cant find the area that this picture was taken either?

My engine is the BMW automatic diesel.

Have you changed the vaccum control filter ? it looks like a fuel filter hanging down at the back of the engine,this was the problem part that caused my symptoms,try that first.

Is the vaccum control filter also known as the pollen filter?

Apparently - according to the mechanic - there is some diesel been found in the breather valve and its pumping out a lot of smoke when you rev it high.

He thinks the turbo is on its way out!

My 2004 Td4 has a similar issue. Also seems to lose power occaisionally around town too.
At higher speeds the engine management light (orange helicopter light as the wife calls it) comes on briefly then goes off again. On a motorway journey it will do this a lot, seems to be mainly when getting a shift on or pulling up hills though.
Does this sound like the same fault you had??

My 2005 TD4 had the engine management light coming on intermittently on the freeway, shortly after the fuel filter was changed at 100000kms/62000miles. (Prematurely according to the maintenance schedule). Code showed low fuel pressure requiring a new diesel pump. I suggest you have your car linked up to Land Rover Diagnostics ASAP.
 
My Land Rover TD4 2006 reg, 2.0L Auto is in Land Rover now so will know in the next day or so. My problems are:

Lack of power at 70mph (50mph going uphill)
Thick Black smoke coming from the exhaust when revving the engine past 3,000rpm.
Engine management light comes on when it lacks power.
Fault code has been read to be P1470.

I and mechanic cant see the Solenoid unit pictured at the start of this post, so it must be on older models and not the BMW 2006-2007 models.

My orignal problem didn't bring on the engine management light. I also don't think that there were any p-codes in there, well at least my cheapo ebay kit said that there wasn't any.

The turbo boost solenoid STC4198 was definitely fitted to all M47 BMW diesel engines. If you lie on the floor under the drivers door behind the front RH wheel and look up under the engine you should see it next to the turbo. The turbo has a rubber vacuum pipe from the actuator on the turbo itself over to the boost solenoid.

just bought my td4 freelander and joined the group last week. The first thing i read was the article losing power at 70mph, it must have been fate ihave been having problems with my baby since i bought it a few weeks ago. thought it was the egr valve so bought a bypass vale off the net but it was still the same although it seemed to run smoother.Then i read KUNGFU0210s article and changed the boost solenoid hey presto the problem cured. I think we should vote for him as prime minister ,a really big thank you mate.

I then removed the vac hose from the solenoid, drove the car and the problem has gone. Is the solenoid energised all the time or only at certain loads. As the problem goes when the vacuum is disconnected from the turbo, the turbo must be operating correctly.

Yes, the vent is clear. When does the solenoid operate? When it needs boost or when it does not need boost?

Hi there,

PLugged the freelander into my brothers new toy! A code decoder/scanner. Did a test on the vehicle and no error codes or pending codes. Drove it and did a live data and was fine also. Idle was 797rpm and steady. When I drove it and warmed up well it started to hesitate on pull away. Looking at the live data it seems to pause at 1500 rpm. It was like me letting go of the gas then pressing it. Still no faults found. COuld it be something with throttle? or a still symtpom of maf? or Turbo boost solenoid?
