Could check the piston against my photos to check it is the modified one.
Mind you don't damage the very thin seal rings. Only fingers to extract it!!! If feels stuck but it is oil sticktion.

I was going to to the brakes on the Freelander today but it's too damn hot so I grabbed the donor drum instead and finished stripping it to see what I have. Took some work to get the piston out as you said but I got there in the end, and I'm very pleased to say that this piston is the later part.

Despite the minimal wear on the rings, there was a fair amount of junk in the drum so I flushed it all out. All back together now and ready to swap in to my gearbox. Thanks again for the assistance.

If you've read this far, the repair was a success and stopped all slipping. However, the vehicle developed a hard change into 3rd or 4th.

Summary is that when I did the work I used a second-hand reverse clutch drum complete and didn't open it and change the seals. Just replaced all friction bands. I read that opening it was tricky and not easily done by a home mechanic and so I left it !!

As this drum appears (despite its name) to be responsible for these changes I thought I would put new piston seals in the new reverse drum and fit it to the gearbox.

All gear changes now smooth. Will be opening the previous drum assembly to see what was causing the sticking or late action.

Photos will be posted!!

Found the problem. The seal on the reverse piston cover had swollen so that it didn't slid in smoothly. Identified when I clamped the cover to remove the circlip and could not compress the spring. Then it went in with a bang, like the gear change !!

Hard to explain, but will try.

First pic shows the attempt to compress the reverse piston cover which should slid against a spring inside.

Second pic is said seal which is really too large to fit now it has been out. It has gone hard too.

Nice to find root cause !!

Wife's car and she is happy and no longer coming home from a long drive with whiplash !! 😇
