td4 change turbo or not?

2005 td4 freelander 1
136,000m egr bypass

Has always leaked oil from turbo seals. Had to sort 2 injectors last summer and cleaned some of the black goo from inlet tracts and airbox at the time. Think the leak is worse now. It drips out near air temp sensor in top intercooler hose. It smokes on start up but clears after a few seconds.

Plan is a recon turbo, clean out hoses and intercooler just cant decide how urgent it is. I was waiting for warm weather as i have to work on it outside but im worried that the seals will completely fail, the engine might run away and knacker itself.

Thoughts / views?

There are various recon options for the turbo, but I would check the crankcase breather before anything else. And keep a stanley knife and rag in the glovebox in case of runaway!

As above change the PCV filter, clean out the manifold, remember to remove the MAP sensor before cleaning which can be wiped clean with a rag with some carb cleaner on, scrap any excess gunk out of the main holes in the manifold, oven cleaner is good for cleaning out the rest soak for at least two hours minimum the jet wash it all out, dry it out allow your self a good decent day to do this job, while it is drying out changed the PCV filter, air filter, I would also change the intercooler hoses as it sounds like they are past there best, silicone are better.

On the subject of oil in the intake and the PCV. If you have the BMW cyclone type separator, then there will be some oil in the intake, by way of it's design. The cotton real filter is much better at taking out oil than the cyclone type which can be fitted.

Cut the boost pipe. I'd not use the rag myself, just a quick cut of the elbow boost pipe will stop the engine running away.
