Hi all,
First post so tell me I’ve done something wrong, cheers.

I have a 2005 TD4 and today when leaving work I got onto the motorway and tried to accelerate but the engine management light lit up and it went into limp mode. I keyed off and back on and the light disappeared and I regained power, until I tried to speed up to overtake and it did it again! This also happened yesterday morning when leaving the house, but I thought nothing of it.

Once I got off the motorway and onto the back roads (and when the engine had got to operating temp? I don’t trust the temp gauge 🤣) I kicked its head in all the way home and the light never returned.

When I put my scanner on it came up with the code ‘Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction’ (see below).

I’ve had a read through a few threads but it seems everyone who has had this code has had engine starting issues or cutting out which mine has not had, so I’m a bit lost and would appreciate the help of a clued up mechanic or someone who has had the same problem and fixed it.

My first thoughts are it’s down to the colder weather we’ve suddenly got in the UK this week, or at least I feel like it’s got colder as I’ve been down south for the past 4 week and got back home to Cumbria this week.

Anyhow I’m stuck and need help, thank you in advance for anyone that helps out.

Edit:
On the way to work this morning, it did it again and each time I keyed off, I accelerated again it would flash back up. When I was accelerating, it sounded as if the turbo wastegate wasn’t opening.

My freelander is straight piped so you can usually hear a change in exhaust tone when the wastegate opens, but today the boost just kept building and the wastegate never opened? Wondering if that might have something to do with it.

Fixed!

So I got round to giving the sensor a clean up today and when I pulled it out its looks as if something has taken a chunk out of it. Also seems to be a spurious part which might mean it sits lower in the case? and so that has resulted in this contact with moving parts. I’ve replaced it with a genuine part and hopefully I should have no more issues.

Hi,

Erase the code to see if it came back.
Can be the sensor, you can change it to see if it solve the issue.

Hi,

5 minutes to change, but cost almost 100 bucks in new. If it’s dead you can’t start at all. First clean the connector to see if it is better.

Also if the engine lack of power, it can be a split turbo hose.

Can be the egr that is not opererating as it should, because a vacuum hose is split.

turbo hoses are all fine and egr has been deleted so I’ll check the sensor and give it a clean.

Hi,

I still have the egr connected, it’s clean and not giving me issue. Don’t know why need to delete it. Also depending the country where you live it can be an issue for the MOT.
