Hi
I have been looking at all the TD4 and BMW 2ld forums on this common problem but haven’t managed to find any cure. Mine is a 2004 TD4 with about 85000 on the clock. It has been fitted with a Synergy2, egr bypass, BMW vortex and has been run on shell fuel. For the last couple of months it has started to produce a large plume of blue/white smoke on start up after it has stood overnight or has not been started for several hours. It is bit lumpy for a few seconds then clears and runs absolutely fine after that. I have had the injectors tested and 2 of them refurbished. I have also replaced the fuel and air filters and the glow plugs but the problem continues. It doesn’t seem to be losing any oil or water and I am now at a loss. Has anybody got any idea what the problem could be?

Ours does that sometimes too, first thing in morning its fine, hot engine its fine, just when left for 2 - 4 hours so is just warm, not cold enough to bring in the glow plugs, then its lumpy with white / blue smoke for a couple of seconds.
Try the above, and make sure it gets good runs with good fuel, try using Millers Diesel Eco Max too.
I have contemplated making a timer to bring in the glow plugs regardless, I tried it once and it started a lot better.
As for the cause I'm not sure but its dam common. As Rhodie said, low fuel pressure is probably the most likely thing, maybe after a few thousand miles the pumps don't come up to pressure as quickly....?
If you find anything else be sure to let us know..

when i went to main dealer (stratstones) they told me it was all ok the later ones all did it but then they did tell me to clean out the EGR and maf i have just done a nearly compleat service but did not have time to do these but will asap

Our EGR is disabled, Pierburg MAF and Synergy II. Careful when cleaning the MAF, I cleaned the one on my Audi TDI and ****ed it up good and proper!! Think from memory I used carb cleaner and didn't touch the surfaces with anything..
When ours is cold there is a slight stumble at 2000rpm if you hold it there on the throttle in neutral. White smoke too, drives fine though..

Hi, does it look like this:

If so. I had to change all 4 the injectors, put in 4 new glowplugs and refurbish the Bosch HP pump. Totall tching tching. euro 2.130,--. Now, it's good.

Hi all sorry to hijack this just wanted to know were Silkwood got the overhaul kit for the high pressure pump from many thanks, and sorry again

You chaps are very good at scaring the begeebers out of petrol only folk like me. I always believed that one of the many advantages of a doozal was its reliability and longevity - dont seem to be so! :)

I think a lot of the issues with diesels seem to be the regular servicing, along with any fuel / oil additives that may be required. If any of these are overlooked, then it's my opinion that the problems arise. Mechanically, my FL 1 is sound, now electrically, a slightly different matter......... albeit minor issues, not engine :)

Agree on servicing point, dont really get why additives to diesel fuel are needed - perhaps doozals have just got too darn complicated, like everything else!

Im planning to switch to D2 but cant decide petrol or diesel.

what will the proposed disco be used for .. primarily ?

just to add .. re: petrol versus diesel
briefly searching the disco forum hasn't provide much useful info .. .. :-/

Mostly tarmac, low miles, some motorway but not much. I have a reasonable knowledge of petrol but have never owned a doozal. My other half has had 3 now but all dealer maintained - all points to V8 but 17mpg?
