TD4 auxiliary belt

You can change the crankshaft pulley, but as others have said you need the special tool. Its not that expensive though. What you will need is quite a bit of heft to get the bolt free. The belt is actually not that bad to change but watch your fingers when releasing the tension.
Take some pictures to remind you of how the belt goes.

Hi

Thanks for all advises, but I finally give it to the garage for the belts and the tensioners.

Before I had the feeling that the power steering was sometimes odd, and there was a sound coming from the engine bay.

Now the steering wheel is good and the engine makes a lovely agricultural sound like it should. :D

I'd love to know what it is that actually makes a diesel sound like a diesel!!

Sounds odd but our new low mileage TD4 is as quiet as a mouse. What do you have to change to make an old one quiet again??

Is it everything??

A majority of the noise is from the reciprocating components.
When the engine is new, all bearing fits, piston clearances and so on are tight.
However as the engine gradually wears, all the clearances go from tight fits to running clearances, and that's why the noise increases.
The noise isn't bad, it's just normal diesel noise. All engines get more noisy at they wear, and is of no concern, unless you like a quiet engine.
