TD4 2002my on service schedule

I have just copied my lr dealer service schedule. I know this appears elsewhere on this forum BUT this one includes the dreaded crankcase breather filter every service. (This doesn't even get a mention on the other schedules i've seen).

On this note I've decided Ive had enough of Lr rip off service so i did me own - lucky i did with the amount of crud in said filter, housing and inlet pipes i'm surprised my turbo didn't give up long ago. (filter aledgedly replaced last service at main dealer (1yr/8500m) ago.

Did the lower cover hole thingy-after drilling screws out - (never been out) - I Hate those garage vacuums How do they get the crud out of sump?
Also on same line - Haynes manual for model 2004-2007 td4 doesnt mention replacing crankcase breather either and this manual has only been out a couple of months!
I feel sorry for anyone servicing thier car based on their schedule

I think the replacement of the crankcase breather filter is a relatively new item. It was (allegedly) replaced on my 53 for the first time in March 07.
After this date servicing is done by self.

If you have "crud" in your sump then your engine has big problems. Sludge in the sump only happens when the oil in not changed for tens of thousands of miles. I personally don't use the sucker as it takes longer than draining it properly.

Also there is no need to take the undertray right off to drain the oil, just whip out the two 10mm bolts at the back and pull the cover down, I then use a "ramp" to let the oil run down so it keeps the tray clean.

After 8000 miles your breather will be black. When the filter goes hard and sticky, thats when you know it's never been done.

I will take your good advice on my next TD4 oil change but assume it won't apply to a V6 as the undertray will have to come off to change the filter. Your comments would be appreciated

That's what makes forums like this so bl.... valuable and interesting....

Btw. My neighbour went to an independant LR specialist (that guy used to strip Def.s, rebuild and sell them for a hobby, later also RR came to him and now also some FL's and the hobby became a parttime see almost fulltime job) for his last service, I asked him whether the crankcase breather filter was replaced, which, as far as he thought/knew, wasn't so he called the guy to ask confirmation. Result is that there also these filters will be regularly replaced on the Td4's he gets in. Even though he has good contacts with two official LR dealers he was never informed of this.......

A quick update on the filter thread, took car for MOT after completing full service (all filters etc.) and FAILED on emissions

Garage suggested parting with £15 for injector cleaner (wink wink and it might pass)

. And it did

.
I think all that was a load of bo***cks, and the more likely culprit was all the crud and sludge in the turbo inlet, (so car was sucking in oily air) caused by pressure in crankcases due to blocked filter.

i thought you should change the filter [decompresion breather filter] at about 35,000 miles . . . .

When I go to the mot I always drive the last couple of miles in such a gear that the needle of the revcounter almost hits the red. This way it blows the exhaust 'barrel' clean and so far all exhaust tests were ok. Ciao.

Can this filter be cleaned by soaking in petrol or similar like we used to do in the old days with metal mesh type filter breathers?

Some suggest white spirit. IIRC the best solution is to fit the later BMW part that does not have a filter element.

it looks like more of an oil separator than a filter, as the new BMW item offers no filtration whatsoever, there is no element.
