TD4 03. The clutch was very soft, pumped it several times and it did go in gear ok.

TD4, 03, as above

Is this likely to be clutch or something else.? PITA fix or relatively simple. Clutch is not easy I know, just hoping that it is something else. Fact that pumping it gets it into gear I'm hoping is servo or fluid.

thanks

Sounds like air in hydraulic system. There is no servo on a TD4. Problem is, how has air got in? Check reservoir has fluid. Try bleeding it. Bleed valve can be found by following fluid pipe from master cyl to gearbox. Bleed valve is on a stub from gearbox near pipe from master. If this does not solve then replace master cyl which comes filled and bled. Quick release coupling allows easy fitment. If the slave cylindet has gone then it is a gearbox out job but be positive and try the above before you panic!!

Sounds like the slave or master is leaking. You can pull the rubber cap off of the Master cylinder and see how much fluid it has in it. It's in the engine bay in front of the clutch pedal.

If it's the master then you usually get a damp carpet in the driver's foot well from the clutch fluid so feel for that.

Master cylinder is easy to change but slave is in the bell housing (hence why Andy said gear box out).

Gear box out means do the clutch/ fly wheel at the same time.

Labour was about £ 300 when I got mine done last (about 3 or 4 years ago).

So with that and parts you're looking at a hefty bill.

Unless the car is VERY cheap I would keep looking for something else.
