Hi, I have recently purchased, 6 months ago, an automatic Discovery TD3 and have already had problems, so was hoping for some advice.
2 weeks before Christmas it wouldn't turn over and start. Managed to get jump start from recovery and take to local garage.
In a nutshell it was there a week, when they attempted to remove glow plugs, breaking said glow plugs which then required an 'expert' to remove and replace. Not a small job by all accounts. Also new battery.
Drove home and numerous lights then lit up on dash, including red and amber park brake, air suspension and the rev counter did not move. Gears would not change in drive mode. I managed to get it back to the garage where they put it on diagnostic, numerous faults showed up. In the end they reset and all seemed fine.
The next day I went to start and the warning lights had appeared again with lack of gear change. It's now waiting to be returned to the garage in the new year.
Any ideas?
Thank You

Find a garage that knows what they are doing.

You drove it to the garage and they fitted a new battery and then stuffed up changing glow plugs, triggered a fuk ton of sensors and now it's having a hissy fit and needs more work and all presumably at your expense?

Stop using jokers who play with your pride and joy and go to a decent Land Rover specialist, yes I know it will cost a bit more on the invoice when it all goes to plan but judging by your recent experiences I would say that each time you take it to your local garage it's costing you the double where they fuk things up and you pay twice as much sorting one problem and then come home with whole new ones.

Or am I missing something?

Thanks for the advice. I think ultimately that's what is going to happen as I don't think they have any idea what is wrong with it. Lesson learnt.:(

Sorry to be harsh but you have an ultra electronic vehicle and at the time it was state of the art, most garages struggle with basic vehicle electrics let alone electronics and the Land Rover Discovery is a very technical bit of kit that needs a mechanic that knows what to do with it and how to interrogate it's brain with the right diagnostics kit that is on the whole marque and model dependent.

I know it is an expensive lesson to learn but you have one of the best 4x4s on the planet that simply needs an owner who understands that it cost the price of a 2 bedroom house in Ipswich at the time it was made so will require that level of investment in maintenance.

D3 glow plugs have a reputation for snapping, they are very small compared to earlier models and are also utter aholes to get at, plenty of stories of people paying a couple of grand to get them out

Cars are very voltage sensitive and its not unheard of for the alt to fry itself taking the battery with it, then people fit a new wbattery which then gets fried again!

Anything less than a Denso alt will end in tears.

There's a few disco 3 owners on here now so any questions you should get a good response. Disco3.co.uk is a good forum as well I understand.

Get it to a landy specialist, find out what codes are thrown up then search/post on here, there's one fella here who should be able to help you get it sorted :)

Do not try to maintain it at a 'normal' garage!;)

Sounds like when batter is fully charged it works, then as voltage drops faults appear, you need to check the alternator output
