Disco 2 Talk dirty to me

Specifically exhausts... Mine's blowing - can smell it at a stop with window open - and getting worse. Not too sure exactly where from just yet, need to try some ways to locate it.

I'm thinking I may be able to do this myself (I'm learning bits and getting more confident), but am pretty clueless even as to what's there and what my options might be for replacing. Probably thinking of doing the whole lot (the final hangar rusted through over a year ago and has been held up by a braid of wire ever since), though it'll depend somewhat on cost. When I search I get a bunch of conversations between people who clearly already know what they're on about lol.

Ist question, have you checked to see if the smell is coming form under the bonnet or not?
Cos if it's from under the bonnet you may have the famous warped exhaust manifold. But I have to say that when mine leaked there was no noticeable smell.
But the most obvious thing to do is to look all over the exhaust from manifold to the end of the pipe with a torch and mirro if necessary. You are looking for traces of soot.
Then if that fails, or to check, Get it ticking over and carefully,cos it's hot, run your hand along it and all around it, not touching it, (better if the hand is wet) until you can feel the leak.
If that doesn't work you'll need to get a mate to help, plug the exhaust with rags or summat, then wire them in place and get your mate to rev it gently while you do the above test. This should blow out more gases and make it easier to find.

Definitely not warped manifold, I've had that 3 times so I know how it sounds. There's a now a very sturdy stud in the head that's going nowhere.

Wouldn't bother!

If you are replacing, I'd go for a propah Sports stainless with a single back box, if they do one. Fitted one to my D1 and it changed the performance and improved the fuel consumption no end.
Might cost a bit more but should last the life of the vehicle. I have had a quick search and cannot find one that gives the bore size to compare to the original, but plenty that say they are sports ones with just a titchy rear silencer.
Then there is one that talks of a 3" pipe, Griffin, but that looks like it is just expensive.
I have tried a replacement pipe for the central box, it made no difference at all.
But if you do go the whole hog and lash out all the bread for a full stainless system they do come with a lifetime guarantee.
Not an easy one apparently.

It obvs isn't stainless, so much cheaper but won't last as long unless you usually drive at least 8 miles or so to ensure the exhasut gets sufficiently hot to evaporate the water that condenses inside it and leads to rust.
Also yes, it is bound to be noisier, the single silencer looks like straight through/absorption type.
The one I mentioned before that I have, is a more conventional box and just makes a nice noise, not intrusive at all, but the performance upgrade comes from it being of bigger bore. (With no other silencer, like this one.) I think this one is trying to make the performance upgrade by removing the obstructive qualities of a conventional exhaust and they will also rely on the noise to make peeps think they are going faster!
But at that price, I'd be tempted to give it a go.
TBH I think I would be tempted to buy some lengths of slightly bigger bore stainless pipe, a silencer, and bend one up. But then I have welding gear and a pipe bender!
