Taking the Hippo abroad

Hi all, as it will be the first time I've ever taken a car abroad next month or even driven abroad do I need to take copies/originals of driving licence and log book?, clearly a copy of the insurance cert. would be a good idea but I just want to make sure I've covered the bases if you can think of anything else I'll need, I've already got an EHIC health insurance card but anything car related would help immensely.

If your going to or through France you need to have a few things in your car to comply with french law, they will be looking for english plates so they can hand out tickets, i can't remember the full list but someone else will jump in with it, 2 x breath test kits, reflective triangle, light bulb set, high viz vests, i think theres a couple of other things.

some countries you have to carry HI vis in your car breakdown triangle etc spair bulbs plugs if your petrol may also be an idea but as said breakdown cover are you insured to drive abroad ?

Hi, yes got European cover on my insurance, I'd looked at extending my AA cover for the trip but I was surprised to find they wanted 90 odd quid just for a 5 day trip, taking two other people so that cost could be split, only going to Holland so will check their regs.

If your a petrol, its a good idea to bring a syphon pump ( plenty of canals) and stay off the motorways..

Dont bother with these.
Its a legal requirement to have them, but there is no punishment for not having them. The implementation of the new law was a botched farce.

You do need one hi-viz vest (kept in the cabin so you can put it on before getting out) and a warning triangle.
Nothing else is mandatory, but a bulb kit is a good idea to prevent an on the spot fine for a failed bulb.

You should mask a part of your headlights, to prevent dazzle of drivers passing you on opposite direction. You can buy some stuff, or just made it with some duck tape.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've got the headlamp things to convert to driving on the wrong side of the road but perhaps need to get hold of a warning triangle.
Thankfully it's a Td4 so hopefully no need to drain the Dutch waterways lol.

All covered, I think. I also always take a spare set of keys on a long trip and give them to my wife to look after.

Just taken a peek (why didn't i do that in the first place!) at the AA website which details all requirements in Europe, yes to originals of licence, log book and copy of insurance cert, but warning triangle and hi-viz recommended but not compulsory.

Managed to get AA cover for a single trip for £60, not too bad considering money supermarket.com could only come up with £144 at best!
