My tailgate window has been a bit stubborn lately, not lowering sufficiently to clear the top seal. Also I have had to pull the handle twice in order for the door to open. A few days ago I shut the tailgate, without realising that the window had closed outside the top seal. When I saw it the next morning I opened the 'gate and when the window raised to the closed position there was a lot of loud clicking for a few seconds. However, 'tother day it started lowering completely when I opened the tailgate, so I had to raise it with the internal switch, again accompanied by the clicking. Since then it has started to refuse to raise without my wife operating the switch and me assisting it manually. Also the rear wiper has stopped working. The window motor seems to be working ok, it's just that it's playing silly b's. Anyone had this problem?.

Very common to have issues with tailgate window in Freelanders. It could be several things but best take off the door card and check the regulator as the wires could be failing.
If I recall correctly 4 large star screws at the bottom then pull hard from the bottom to pop the retainers. It pivots at the top.
It could also be the lock mechanism which has the switch in it for the curtesy light. If the car thinks the window isn't up correctly the rear wiper won't work.
If all looks OK then disconnect the battery for a few minutes and when it's reconnected the window should go all the way down. When you put it back up that recalibrates the window.

There will be a reason the problem happened and most likely cause is old worn cables in the regulator. Ignore it now and you may pay for it later.
Hi, me again. I've taken off the door card and everything seems OK. It has occurred to me that the problem may be the door lock actuator. I have realised that it is that which controls everything, and it has been a bit sticky lately. I have had to operate it twice in order to release the lock, so am I correct in assuming that perhaps this may be the root cause of the problem?. Since this has been occurring the window has not been dropping enough to clear the top seal. Apart from that it is capable of rising and lowering, but does not seem to be getting the correct instruction. (From the door actuator?). Or should I renew the whole lot and be done with it?.

Normally you can see the frayed wires near the motor or one of the rollers if the regulator is at fault but sometimes the issue is hidden at the motor.
The lock actuator failing is pretty common but if you can hear the lock releasing and the window doesn't drop then you need to check the regulator first.
