thats if the wires are broken ?and do you mean trip meter ? i its digital wil be more to it than a bit of solder pop out the cluster and send it off to a specialist
 
It will depend on whether the needle mechanism's gone, or the actual 'rev-counter' in the engine. If it's easy to remove the cluster it should be fairly obvious if it's that that's not working - just test with a circuit metre.
 
try seeing if the wire is fitted to alternator from memory the terminal labelled w
 
Yep, see if you have a signal from the alternator before you rip the cluster out. could be the alternator has been swapped at some time for one that doesn't have the tachometer output.
