Hello All,,
I have managed to get hold of a used but excellent condition Synergy 2,
I have spent ages reading all the information on here about
what setting to have with or without Pierburg,
I have got the below,,Well I will have once it turns up,,

I have Three main questions, and several minor ones..

1. Is the MAF held in by 5 or 6 sided security Torx?
2. Does anyone know what size Torx they are?
3. Is this Synergy2 compatible with the push button or the three way switch?
as I am sure it doesn't have on currently

Minor questions
I have the Silicone hoses,
Pipercross air filter,
new turbo filter,
EGR bypass (Soon to be upgraded to one with a brass boost connection adaptor),
Clean Inlet manifold,
& no smoke at all from exhaust,
Minor whistle that I will be replacing the T Bolts for wide Jubilee clips.
is there anything else I should consider,
before I change over the MAF for the Pierburg one and the Synergy2a fitting

I will be cleaning the Pierburg MAF and the connections on the synergy with
electrical contact spray/MAF Cleaner before fitting to give the best chance
of optimum performance of the equipment.

Answers to 1.2.3 Please and any general information you would like to pass
on with the benefit of hindsight after fitting and running yours..

All information will be great, and I intend reading it all before the install..

Thank you very much in advance..

Firstly, I'll refer you to the Energy Tuning website.

I was thinking about the bolts, and just remembered that I was supplied with the correct tool when I bought it.

Ok.... Just found it. They are 5 sided with the hole in the middle.

I don't remember which size, as I was sent a set of them.

I suspect the Synergy box will be compatible with both tyres of switches, as per the website, but if in doubt, ring Darren or send them an email. I have found him very helpful.

I would imagine that with the Pierburg MAF fitted you would need the 3 way switch,
as if you turned the synergy off the Pierburg without compensation would not allow the engine to run properly..

This will be a later addition so it will be on all the time to start..

I never had the correct torx tool as the car uses the less common version - 5 splines, I believe - so I got an old flat bladed screwdriver that fit across the points of the torx and filed a slot in the middle of the blade to clear the stud in the torx screw. Easy enough to do, only took a few minutes and saved having to buy a tool I would definately only ever use once.

As for the dash switch, mine is a 2a and it has the three way dash switch, which fits via a 3.5mm stereo headphones style jack.
TBH, I never use the dash switch - I leave it on full power all the time, and find that using the extra power carefully can give MPG pretty much the same as switching it to the eco settings.

i was bidding for that too
if id have know it was you bidding agaist me I would have stopped bidding lol sorry hahahah

LMAO,,,I paid extra because of you..

Lets hope it saves on fuel to allow me to recoup the money
soon..:(

If it wasn't you it would have been someone else..;)

Thank you all for the information, I will get a 3 way switch at some
point, but I will just have to enjoy the extra power for a while first..

Just looked at a small set of attachments I purchased this year and I have both
5 and 6 sided security Torx..Happy days..

The 3-way switch has nothing to do with whether you have the Pierburg MAF or not.

The 3-way switch gives you the choice of whether you have Eco mode or Power mode.

On an early Synergy the middle position is 'Off'

On a later Synergy you have Eco2 as the centre position.

There is a switch on the box that you set to 'MAF compensate' if you fit the Pierburg - and leave off if you run the original Bosch. (That's it marked MAF on the right in the picture.)

I looked at your list of mods/improvements and don't see any mention of the PCV filter being changed for the BMW Oil Separator.

AHHH!!!

I did change the PVC for the cyclone one, but I remember that when
I had some work done on the turbo they said something about it,,
I will have to check and see if it still there,
if not should I change it first??
or just make sure the filter is clean??

As this looks like the early Synergy I may just get the LED button
ECO or POWER..

I take it lit is ECO
not lit is POWER??

You beat me to it SV.

I ran my Ronbox for several months with the power turned off and the MAF on. I wanted to see what the difference was as I fitted it days after I purchased the FL1, but had a few other problems that I didn't know about.

You can probably send to Energy tuning and get them to update it to the latest firmware.

I run my dash switch on Eco 2 all the time now.

Hi bud I've a push eco and power switch fitted led lit when power is selected and dim glow on eco. I've got the maf switch on as I'm running a pierburg maf and power setting on 9 seems to work for me..

I have the push button switch also. Fitted the switch into the spare switch blank just to the right of the steering column, beneath the instrument panel on the dash. Grilled a hole in the blank and it fits a treat. The switch turns the Power on or off.
If the Pierburg MAF is fitted, I am sure you must keep the MAF toggle switch on the Synergy box permanently in the ON position. I usually drive the car with the push button in the "Off" position (Power-off).
If you need the fitting instructions or info on the switch options, send me a PM with your email address and I will send you them.

Update #1

After thinking really hard about it I asked the guy to help
fit it so I knew he was not selling me a duff, so asked late
yesterday, this morning he said yes no problem, but he
be home around 18:15, its about 30-45 mins from me so I
agreed to meet at 18:30.
Very dark and hard to see so we just fitted the Synergy
for now, I though it would also give me a chance to see
how much the box makes a difference on the way home,
well I wont say I was unsure you were all telling the truth
but I turned around in his road and floored it,,
We all know its no race car,
but its taken years off the old girl, faster response, faster
pick up, and just seems so smooth all round, sat on the M~way
at 65mph and not a murmur, sweet as a nut,
got off the M~way and did a few from the lights starts, and again
very sprightly,

So first impressions,,
Synergy only,
Both switches to on,
And on setting 5 (Still Bosh MAF)

Very happy, once I have stopped playing with my right foot,
I may be able to see if I get some MPG improvement, as that is
in all honesty why I got it,
but that said its nice to have a bit of power back under my foot
as I am used to effortless gliding from my other car, so its nice
to have a bit more of that from the Freelander..

I will be fitting the MAF and checking the PCV tomorrow, so I
will report if it changes anything, with the MAF fitted I will be setting it
at number 7 where I believe I will get the best out of it, short journeys
and no real need for massive power, but its smother so far..

Also noticed it has no hole for a 3.5mm jack so does that mean no switch required??

States on the paperwork June 09 version..

Choose your setting and leave it ??

Your Synergy must be one of the earlier versions hence the missing Jack socket. You can send the unit back to Tuning Diesels and they will fit the Jack and enable it if you want to fit a switch. Have a look on their website for details...doesn't cost much.
Don't forget to swap the MAF back to the Bosch if you remove the Synergy at all.
I run mine on no.7 setting (Pierburg) and am happy with it.

Second Update..

Contacted Synergy/Ron about the upgrade and to check that the
item I had purchased was one of theirs,

Good news all round,
It is one of theirs, and not a copy,
the upgrade prices are as follows;

"The new chip and jack socket were fitted to the 2a+ models from
about April 2012 but we can upgrade yours for £19.50 inc postage,
+ £20 for the 3 position dash switch."

I will also need a set of Security Torx £10 as mine were not up to the job,
and the little spindle adjuster (free)
as I seem to have had mine drop off somewhere today,:(

Checked what PCV I have and it would seem that I have been changed
back to the Toilet Roll version, this was done when a garage was having
trouble getting it to tick over after some work had been done,
Had a fresh one in the shed so now I have a blue one not a black one..

Is the replacement 11127799224??
Want to be sure to get the correct one when I get one..

Upgrades will have to wait now till new year, But so far the wife and
myself are very happy with the results,
I am still running on 5 but might knock it back to 2 if the weather turns..

Will update in the new year,
