]hi everybody just bought myself a 03 plate td4 at Christmas and i got a 3 month warranty on the engine and gearbox up to now i am impressed with it apart from a few niggles like, getting a shower through the sun roof when its raining :( but anyway i,ll get to my question i have bought a synergy2+ tuning module and i want to know if the are easily fitted my days of messing with car engines are almos over. although i am mechanically minded, cars just had plugs and points in them the last time i looked at an enginr . it goes on about something about a bosch maf and a pierburgh maf.can i tell which one i have or do i just take it to the garage and have it fitted thanks :dance

unless you've bought it with the pierburg maf you should have the original bosch one. if you've had it new from rover-ron it will come with all the fitting instructions, you will need to take off the airfilter cover (which is a bit of a pig first time you do it) to get to the maf plug and then its just the fuel rail sensor plug (middle right of the engine) apart from that its easy lol any questions just ask and welcome to the forums :)

Hi , :welcome2: the bosch maf will be the oem part fitted when new the pierburgh maf is a cheaper replacement , but you must have a synergy box ,to use it , if you go for both you will need to get the special torx bit (6 star) to remove the bosch maf the whole job is easy to do if you get the torx bits :)

they are 5 sided Ian...standard torx are 6 sided ;

thanks for your advice chaps going to have ago at fitting it tomorrow if weather is OK. if every thing goes according to plan i will want some advice on what setting to put it on for towing a caravan cheers :D

just like to let you know how i went on with the synergy2, I could only get it to work OK on the no3 setting i could tell a big difference with acceleration. Usually when i first start the car in the morning i always get a cloud of blue smoke which soon disappears, but with the tuning chip fitted the was hardly a puff of smoke! when i first started it. don't know if this is a good thing or bad thing. cant really give an opinion on it until i have used for a while.but whether is was worth paying a lot of money out for remains to bee seen.

If you have the standard Bosch MAF it should work on all settings from 1 to 5 and 6 -10 if a Piersburg.

It should simply get more powerful as you increase the number - if not then something is wrong.

when i put it on no4 setting it sounded like it was misfiring, and on no5 i was getting a lot of black smoke. can you tell me angeloc if the maf switch should be on as i have not tried it in the off position yet. And one other thing as i have not got a manual for the freelander when i took the rear engine cover off i noticed what i would describe something like an inline plastic clear filter attached only at one end by a thin rubber hose just hanging there. what is it and should the be something attached to both ends of it thanks

Yes switch the maf on - it brings it into spec.

You should have power on as well.

The filter is supposed to have an open end - it is a breather not a filter but Landrover use a filter to keep out nasties.

thanks Singvogel for the link I have just bought a cd manual from ebay but not got it yet.going to start a new post now cos i cant find an answer i need in the forums cheers

The filter which is basically an old type fuel filter should be dangling with only one pipe connected,...... this is your turbo vent filter.
When you had it on setting 4 and say it sounded like it wa misfiring...was the noise a raspy rattly noise on pressing the accellerator?....if it was ......it was more than likely one or more of your injectors complaining....keep to lower settings until you can do a leak back test as this is normally the first sign of them being past thier best.
Black smoke at setting 5 is due to over fueling so again use a lower setting and get the injectors tested sooner than later.

thanks for the info mjrimmer i have got it on no3 setting just now with maf turned off but tomorrow going to fit an egr bypass and put a new crankcase filter in i suppose it trial and error as to which setting but up to now no 3 seems best i am going to be towing a caravan this year and even though i have not towed the caravan on with the synergy fitted i know it will make a big difference if need to overtake or pull away quicker

Why have the MAF off? The synergy will bring a faulty MAF into spec or a good MAF will be kept in spec

Number 3 with MAF on makes sense.

thanks for your reply angeloc i was going to put a post on today, as a few days ago there was some blue smoke coming out of the exhaust that stopped after a day and now when i put the pedal down there seems to be a flat spot and i get a lot of black smoke coming out. it has gone in to the garage today for a service. and i have mentioned the the smoke issue with them. but until i get the car back later today i wont no if it has been fixed.

well fitted mine today oem maf and its a lot smother and more power in eco mode i.e green light on dash switch and when it turn it to red  setting 4 on the box :D:D:D fun fun fun power power power from 30 to 60 2-3 sec faster
no smoke all fine so far
