Swivel Pins Oil/grease

Ok i have a 92 200 tdi, And i was wondering if they perform better with grease or oil in the swivel pins, As im sure i spotted somewhere that LR filled them with grease on later models (98ish), Ok so what grade grease would it be if i could or wanted to use it?? Many thanks in advance!

Also what do you prefer in your pins a liquid lube or a good grease lube???

Really, make ya own? Ok i have a huge tub of high temp grease will this do? Blended with what an ep90????

My 3.5 RR had oil and now my 3.9 disco has grease although also hasTeflon covered swivels. The oil requires replacing every 24k miles the grease stays for life as there's no straight forward way of removing it or checking the quantity.

I don't know what you mean "perform better" they are both lubricants.
Grease will not leak out like oil but oil was ok in my RR the 10 years I had it.

Lol no me neither wrong word to use but i was rushing!

Probly should have read "What would be better in the long run" :confused2:

Anyway both axles drained and refilled with oil, no metals or water in the oil so im guessing that cant be to bad considering it used to be an ex farm motor with a 181k on the clock! back onto the swivels one looks like its going to leak when i refill it, the other looks good so far! One prop uj is flopping about so new one ordered!

Ok I had a leak from a swivel (dripping on the tyre) on my RR so I pumped some LM grease in, as at the time LR's were coming out with the "one shot grease"..... Only 8 or 10 trigger pulls so not much, anyway the leak stopped. I went on for three years like that till sold the car and still no more drips .
After I saw it worked I greased the other side that didn't leak, just in case, why not.

although I wouldn't have done it other than it had that leak.

Search ebay for swivel grease. Do it once and forget it

i use grease in landie but its low speed and millage, in my Disco i always use oil high speed and mileage, you get better lubricant grease tends to throw out and stay in one place

Good point! Sod it, oil it is and if it leaks then hey its just a few hours work to correct isnt it?

Mix EP and grease as you suggested, about 50 50, it'll be runny enough not to stick but thick enough not to mess your tyres, or get the Landrover stuff, only a fiver per wheel.

Thats not so bad, Its looking like a possibility that i may have to do this as when oil was introduced into the swivel it had started leaking by the time i had finished the other side!!!

And that was before it was driven anywhere

, Just have to see, Also to add the lil square level plug would not budge either side, So its a guess on the level side of things but its a roundabout the right amount from a measure! Any issues with overfilling???

YES, if you overfill, the excess will force it's way out and end up on yer brake discs - trust me, I know.

twernt the swivel oil seal, twas the hub bearing seal, so ner ner

Hey guys just to bring this up again, well hmmmm, the nearside that was leaking, It aint leaking no more,,,,,,,,,

,,,,,,,,,Its all gone!!!! And to add if i

her up and push the top of the tyre in,,,,,,,,,,,,Um,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,It goes in and out by a good inch just flapping and clunking about!!!!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,(the offside wheel which is solid and does not wobble as u would expect to find it),,,,,,,,,Im thinking its fooked, and im thinkin its the swivel pins that are fooked??????? Just lookin for a defo opinion on the pins please ...........................

Time for new swivel bearings and pins methinks - Paddocks do them, cheap and I've found, good. Swivel grease - 1 shot - is about £3 per side !!

Did this on the Tdi200 we had and 50,000mls later she was still parfait !!!

Kinda new it was coming, Also would it be a groovy idea to do the rear swivel seal whilst its all in bits OR could the leaking just be down to excessive play from the iffy pin/s????

If I were you, I would replace all the seals and if there is any doubt at all, the wheel bearings as well.

To do this job is sufficiently time-consuming that while you got it to bits, my advice would be to back with all new.

Thanks dave, already had a bit of a price up, think a full kits in order, mite as well seeing as the bearing race has disentegrated and fell inside!
