Just opened up the swivel pin housing (Disco 1, 1998: just one hole on top for filling, no level plug, no drain plug) and found what looks like the remnants of grease. It's dark and pretty stiff. I put a piece of wire down to the bottom and it came back pretty well dry - just a few globs of grease on it here and there and the bottom inch completely clean.

I thought the housing should be about half-full of a flowy kind of grease?

Looks to me like they need some more lubricant in there. Can I just top up with 90W gear oil until I get around to pulling it apart, cleaning it out and doing the seals etc (parts - including the one-shot grease stuff - are going to take me a month to get)?

Thus, if you require topping up, you have bigger problems.

I thought, perhaps incorrectly it seems, that the later axle without all the holes in it did not come in until D2s and TD5s.
 
You can fill with 90 grease, but if they are leaking then it may come out fairly quickly.

One shot grease is used , it is normally sold in a tube, one tube used per side. EP90 volume was 0.35 litres per side.

If you are going to replace the seals in the near future, then you can try ep90 and just keep an eye to make sure it does not come flying out. Or half a tube of one shot in each half in the short term. As a rough guess.

Ignore the link, that's is not applicable to the later D1s with grease filled swivels, that isn't a top-up hole the swivel are filled for life, or renewed when a repair and strip down Is required.
If you wish to fill with EP 90 I believe a new swivel takes a 1/3 litre oil but like my old RR the swivel had a drain, fill and a level plug because as always it's impossible to drain fully when required to do so, which D1s from 1996 don't have when they went over to the black Teflon swivels

Sick to something you know about, as D2s don't have swivels
 
Thanks - since the 1-hole housing looks pretty much like the 3-holer I'm going to assume the same capacity and put about 1/3 of a liter of gear oil in there and see what happens. Anything really bad comes of it, I'll post a pic here.
 
Just a little hint,

If you are going to fill. It is easier to make sure the wheel is turned to allow the fluid / grease to go into swivel unit. When you look at it the previous sentence will make sense.
