Would like to fit the gearbox from a 300TDi lump (ex disco) which I have and fit it to the 2.25 4cyl petrol engine in my series 3 1982 ex military lwb. The grape says that it can be done using an adaptor plate so, if it is possible does it adversly affect refitting the transfer box and transmission shafts regarding increased/decreased length or is there sufficient 'play' to accommodate any difference.

i wouldnt its more hassle than gain
 
Really need a differeng gearbox the engine is screaming at 50+ and is begging to be dropped into 5th - if only there was one. I was hoping that the lesser weight and a 5th gear would be an improvement. My alternative is to fit the complete 300TDi and box and that would be enormous hassle as well as expense.

Have you looked at Ashcroft high ratio transfer box, or the various overdrives that are available?
 
Hi. Have had a perfunctory 'shufty' at Ashcroft - most interesting thanks. I dont know what the donor Disco gearbox identification is. Is it an LT77 or R380 and how would I find that out ? Phanx

Ashcroft trans box, or overdrive, just use the standard box that is in your series. No donor box required.
 
Very many thanks to you guys for the information. I shall call Ashcroft tomorrow and have a chat with them. I may be back with other problems but thanks for helping with this.

Change the diffs for 90/110/RR/Disco 1 and you'll have a big improvement. As long as you don't need to drive up the side of mountains.

Or want to accelerate, or tow a trailer.
The beauty of an overdrive or Ashcroft box is that it leaves you low gears if you want them.
Higher ratio diffs are fine if you have a big engine, not great with a standard Series engine.
 
I would also like to fit an LPG system to the 2.25 but I know that it should not be fitted to engines with old style valves. Cars were fitted with harder valves to accommodate the unleaded petrol but I cannot remember when that happened. I am thinking that I maybe OK as the engine is in the '82 series 3 vehicle but is anyone able to trow more light on this and confirm that it is fitted with the harder spec valves. Big ask I know.

I should think most series engines have had the mods retrofitted by now, leaded fuel went out a long time ago.
As regards LPG, do your research carefully, remember you will need to fit another fuel tank, and there isn't much room in a Series.
Unless you will be doing a lot of mileage, the cost and hassle may not be justified.

We ran a 2.25 petrol for 150k on unleaded with no mod or adatives, mixed use, so very heavy towing on the motorway, some commuting. Took the head off and no damage was visable and the engine still ran just as well. Heads were so cheap back then we always thought the gamble was worth it.
